Wi-Fi is lightning fast on phone and laptop, but agonizingly slow on PC in the same room

Hello! In my room, my phone and laptop each get a full 3 bars and are both lightning fast. However, in the very same spot my PC is going slower than it ever has been. For example, I’m currently downloading Doom Eternal at like a third of a megabyte per second, which I think is ridiculous. Everything is completely fine on every other device, even if its in the same location as the computer. What’s the move here? I can’t wait a week every time I want to install a game. Is there anything I can do? My system model is G707 and the system manufacturer is MicroElectronics.

**Some stuff I’ve tried that didn’t work -**

• Network Reset

• Tried to update the driver for my network adapters. I read I should look for something called ‘Broadcom’ but I don’t have Broadcom anywhere in the network adapters category. If it was something else, I have eleven things under my network adapter category and I don’t even know which one I should be updating to begin with.

• I ran the internet connections troubleshooter, which came back with no issues.

• I put in some console commands as directed here, then carried out a clean boot.

    Hello,

    Sorry for the late reply.

Based on your description, you can try checking the following:

    • How strong is the Wi-Fi signal (how many "bars" are displayed)? If the signal itself is weak, the connection will be slow.
    • Enable mobile hotspot on your smartphone and connect your PC to the hotspot. If the speed matches your smartphone's, it is probably because the router is misconfigured. Try rebooting or resetting your router and see whether the speed improves. Refer to your router's manual for how to do so.
    • Which mode your Wi-Fi card is using? If your card is using low-speed modes like 802.11a/b/g, the connection will be limited by it. You can press Windows+R and type "control", change "View by" to "Small icons", and select Network and Sharing center->Change adapter settings. Right-click the Wi-Fi card and select Properties->Configure->Advanced. The options available depend on the manufacturer, so please look for "802.11 Wireless Mode" or similar, and set it to (from better to worse) "ax", "ac", or "n". You can check your motherboard manual (or your Wi-Fi card's manual if bought standalone) for more details.

    Hi, thanks for the response!

I do not have any antennae on my PC, and I never had.

I should mention, when I first got the PC a few years back, download speeds were completely serviceable, even without the antennae. I swapped to an ethernet cable roughly a year later, and used the ethernet cable up until a week ago, when I had to move the PC to a different house. Only now is the internet connection going at 2mbps.

Thanks for your patience so far! I really appreciate the help.

    Hello,

By "antennas", I mean the antennas that are installed on the rear I/O plate on the motherboard (the place where the Ethernet port and lots of USB ports are in).

Hello Johann! Sorry for the late reply, I was never notified for this.

I cannot use ethernet unfortunately, as I have moved to a different floor from the router. I tried to double-check the antennae and, as it turns out, this router has no antennae. It's just a white box, haha!

I opened a ticket and spoke with a Microsoft agent last night and nothing came of it. We ran some speed tests, however, which show a speed of roughly 3mbps on my PC and 130mbps on my laptop, which is connected to the same Wi-Fi network, just feet away from the PC.

Thanks for the reply, and I hope you can help!

    Hello,

Thank you for using Microsoft products and posting to the community.

Based on the model you have provided (MicroCenter PowerSpec G707), the PC has an Ethernet port. You can try connecting your PC to your router directly via Ethernet, then check and install all available Windows updates (including the optional updates, since driver updates are often listed as optional that are not installed by default).

If you have to use a wireless network, check whether the antennas are installed properly, and move your router closer to your PC. Once connected, install the updated drivers from Windows update, as I have said above.

Please feel free to correct me and share information if I have misunderstood your situation, and I will continue to provide further support.

    Best Regards,
