Specific keys not working sometimes

Hello,

I have this very annoying problem, where specific keys on my keyboard don't work sometimes. The keys being: p,i,o,r, u and right Shift. Sometimes they don't respond at all for a longer while and then randomly start working again for a moment, sometimes they work totally fine and other times they start working after repetitive pressing. I struggle to write anything and I think I tried all solutions internet offers, like reinstalling the keyboard, trying to update keyboard drivers, troubleshooting, checking for Windows updates. I even tried the sfc scannow and DISM commands and it gave me the message that it found corrupt files and repaired them, but this didn't help, running it again didn't show any other problems. The only thing I didn't try yet and is shown as a possible solution, is clean boot, but I dont want to mess anything up by accident with it, so I'm still looking for less drastic solutions.

Weird things that seemed to work before and helped for a short time was unpluging some of external harddrives and pluging a graphic tablet. Don't know how that could be related to the problem though and it doesnt really help anymore.

I was suspecting some background process to disrupt keyboard, tried to turn some safe ones off and it doesn't really change anything or just fix it for a short while and it's hard to identify what changes, but nothing seem suspicious.

I'm also pretty sure it is not dirt, because sometimes it works fine and normally for a while and it's just so random, with a set of keys quite far from each other, i dont feel anything stuck in there too when i press them. And even if it was, dirtI cant check because it's a laptop.

It's a HP Pavilion laptop, if it helps with identifing the problem in any way

    Hello,

Thank you for all the help and all the replies. Unfortunatelly, when I took my laptop to the service to help fix the problem, it turned out the problem was the keyboard itself. I was certain the problem has to be in the system or background process, because the keys that are broken are not overused when I use my keyboard, and I always tried to keep my keyboard clean, never spilled any drink on it too. The keys were also randomly working fine. The keyboard is being fixed now and will have to be replaced. Thank you once again for trying to help

    Hello Ewa Nowakowska,

    Welcome to the Microsoft community!

I understand your frustration with particular keys on your keyboard.

I noticed that you tried a lot of things, reinstalling the keyboard, trying to update keyboard drivers, troubleshooting, checking for Windows updates. Even tried the sfc scannow and DISM commands, which were perfectly correct for solving the keyboard problem.

Here are some possible causes and troubleshooting steps:

    1. Try creating an account to see if this problem occurs. If not, the user configuration is OK.

Create a local user or administrator account in Windows - supported by Microsoft

If a new account is also experiencing this issue, you can refer to the following link to fix your user profile:

Repair corrupted user profiles in Windows - supported by Microsoft

    1. I noticed that you haven't tried clean boot yet, first, let me explain to you that clean boot does not damage the user's files, it helps the user start Windows by launching a minimum of drivers and startup assemblies to determine if the background program interferes with the program.

Therefore, I think there may be third-party applications on your computer that interfere with the keyboard mapping, if so, uninstall them first, as this could be the cause of the keyboard mess.

    1. If you try it after understanding the reasons for a clean boot, here is a link to the official steps for a clean boot:

How to Perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

    1. Considering that you are not willing to try a clean boot operation, can you consider putting your computer in safe mode?

The working principle of the safe mode is to start the computer without loading the third-party device driver, thus eliminating the interference of the third-party application, enter the safe mode and try again to delete the folder normally, the specific steps refer to the following link:

Boot your computer in safe mode in Windows - Supported by Microsoft

    1. If it is not related to third-party applications, then I will consider system and hardware reasons, if it is system reasons, you can refer to the following link for Windows 10 ISO file repair.

How to: Perform a Repair Upgrade with Windows 11 or Windows 10 - Microsoft Community

    1. If you are not willing to try this solution, then for hardware testing reasons, you may want to consider sending your device to the aftermarket.

If you have problems with the operation, please reply below and I will try to help you.

    Hello again,

Thank you for the reply. I've been quiet for a while because I removed some programs like statistica and it seemed to fix a problem for those 2 days, the keyboard was working totally fine. Unfortunatelly today I noticed it started doing the same thing again, lagging on the same keys as before. I thought the statistica program was going too hard on the software, but how is that I removed the program, the problem disappeard and then came back even if the program is still removed?

I will try to do the repair upgrade solution, will let you know if it helped. The problem is, I can't tell right away, because the problem seem to come back randomly after few days, even when it seems fixed as with the situation above. I dont really know where to find this Bitlocker key required for safe mode, I think I am logged in on my laptop, because on start menu it shows my email and ,,microsoft accont', but I don't know where I could check the key on this account.

I might try the clean boost at this point, but from what I understand it only helps to narrow down the cause of the problem, not remove it. I will be able to tell that the problem is caused by third party apps, but still won't be able to know which one, and there is a lot of them running in the background normally, it would be risky to take a guess.

    Hello Ewa Nowakowska,

Thank you for your reply, which let me know the progress of the problem.

I fully understand your trouble that the problem recurred after the operation, please let us continue to work together to solve this problem.

First of all, let me explain to you about clean boot. If your keyboard has problems due to third-party application interference, using the clean boot method can not only boot your computer in a way that excludes third-party application, but also find the third-party application that affects the root cause of the system according to the steps in the link. Refer to the "How to Determine what is causing a problem after performing a clean boot" section in the connection for specific actions.

     .

I noticed in your response that the possibility of third-party influence was very high, and that the problem recurred immediately after you fixed the upgrade. If third-party apps continue to interfere with your keyboard, this can indeed cause the problem to reappear, in which case using clean boot is an appropriate way to get to the root. Please tell me about the next progress in finding the root cause of the problem using clean boot.

Safe mode works similarly to clean boot, and clean boot helps you find the root cause, so you don't have to use safe mode for this scenario, just in case, I will provide you with the official steps on how to find the Bitlocker key, please refer to this link:

Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support

I understand that there may be a lag in the occurrence of this issue, and I will keep this post for you for a while to follow the progress of this issue, and I will provide you with continued support if this issue occurs to you again.

    Hello,

I'm here after the repair upgrade and I can already tell it didnt fix the problem. I would even say it made it worse, before I could press the key a few times and it worked, now it barely respond at all and when it does its only for short while. I'm writing from my phone its so bad at this point
