Windows Indexing

I upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 roughly 3 mths ago. I was having issues with File Explorer not finding files or the files it found were on the cloud, so I contacted Microsoft support. Apparently, it was Indexing issue which I did not know about.

As the issue kept going, I started on 12th July to enter my Pending and indexed date into excel then a graph, so I had some idea what was happening. I was going to System>Privacy&Security>Searching Windows and in the top right hand corner it displays the pending and indexed data.

on 12 July I had pending 130875 71590 Indexed

on 26th Aug i had pending 121021 200578 Indexed

Today probably because I was moving folders around to get OneDrive to work, the stats are slightly worse.

today I have pending 152761 195625 Indexed.

I know it's a long intro but are there any ideas on how to speed up Indexing, or should I be patient and see in a month or so will windows finish indexing. For a while I let the laptop run all day all night to see if that helped, it did not.

I did note on my graph on the 29-30 July index jumped up a lot then it basically stopped on about 110000 until 21 aug then it rose quickly until the 22 august now its stable again not getting any bigger. No idea why twice it seemed to do a lot of indexing then simple not do much.

Any Ideas

Regards

Graeme

Hi John, I know I have already responded to your email earlier.

I just checked my stats before I turn the computer off for tonight and note that Outlook which was showing approx. 20645 files to be index suddenly jumped up to 41179. I had gone through and deleted a few old email which I thought would have reduced to figure not doubled it.

Also is there any correlation between the indexing figures in Outlook and the figures I get when look at System>Privacy and Security>Searching Windows and the results are in top right hand corner.

    Sorry for all the questions

    Regards

    Graeme

    Hi John

I feel I am going to have to get onto support at some stage in the future as this indexing I feel will never stop. I do not have an issue with my PC, if I was not aware of how to see what's been indexed, I would not think about it so maybe I should not think about it.

it's interesting looking at my Graph of Indexed and Pending it seems if anybody tries to fix it including myself (after googling it), it just starts from the start again. Indexed had got up to 200578 on the 26th August now its back to 56695 and slowly building day by day. I feel by adding the pending and Indexed the total 306570 is probably my total but the figure does seem to change day by day.

I noted the other day when I did a search in Outlook, I got a pop up "You may not see all search results because we are still organizing some items 20641 remaining." Never seen that before, that was on the 5th Of September at 2:44pm, today 20646 still remaining. Currently my Outlook is doing approximately 0.2 of an item every hour (this is extremely slow), based on this it will by my estimated take 1548 hours to complete, that's if you trust the data. In all seriousness it does concern me why it's so slow to update Outlook (0.2 of an items per hour), I even turned the computer to not sleep hoping things would speed up.

John if you have any ideas on Outlook Indexing, as the general indexing is going up by a few hindered items per hour, but that figure seems to go up and down I have no understanding why.

John it might simply be as you said Windows 11 being upgraded to my laptop and there are indexing compatibility problems, so learn to live with it.

Look forward to a reply John.

    Regards

    Graeme

    Hi Graeme,

I'm glad to hear that the technician was able to help you by repairing Office 365 and running the Inbox Repair tool (SCANPST.EXE). Hopefully, this resolves the issue, and your Outlook will work smoothly.

It's not uncommon for new operating systems and software versions to have some initial compatibility or configuration challenges. If you ever encounter more issues or have questions in the future, don't hesitate to reach out to Microsoft Community. Your satisfaction is important, and we're here to help.

    Thank you!

    John J.D.

    Hi John

I thought I should get support to do this, my computer skills would probably create more issues.

Lucky I did, as (SCANPST.EXE) was not there so the person had to run a repair on office 365, then he could find (SCANPST.EXE) so did task.

Seems okay now I guess I will see over the next week or so if that message re appears.

Have to say windows 11 or office 365 must be full of issues as other OS seemed to simply run without issues.

    Thanks for your support John.

    Regards

    Graeme
