Xbox app remote play not working - black screen with audio only

I have been researching this issue all morning, the Xbox app remote play is not working properly. When I can connect, I can hear the game (because I've already got it loaded up on the console) but the screen on the PC is black. I can hear the controller moving around on the screen too, but there is just a black screen.

I have reinstalled the Xbox App, and I've tried the test app Xbox Game Streaming, and get the same results - audio with black screen.

I have reset the remote feature on the Xbox console too, made sure I am not in power save, and shut it down properly and unplugged it for a minute.

I also made sure that I have the Xbox Game Pass. None of the threads or videos have helped this morning.

    Hi Kelly,

I had the same issue, just figured out a fix that worked for me.

1.Went to general settings and then TV & display options

    1. Then under display I changed my resolution to 1080p from 720p

It seems my TV resolution is worse than my laptop resolution and by changing this, the image becomes recognised by my laptop. Additionally, it could be the other way round.

    Hope this helps!

In case anyone is still finding this because of the black screen issue…i was able to fix this by changing the screen resolution settings in my xbox from 720 to 1080.

Once I did that…video popped right up in the xbox app on my pc.

I had a similar issue, seems to be linked to the hdmi Monitor.

If the monitor is off I get a black screen using remote play but when I turn the Monitor on remote play immediately works on a Android app

    Hello Kelly,

My name is Hanem, an independent advisor, and I'm here to help you.

I'm sorry that you are experiencing this issue, and I will try my best to assist you.

When did this issue with your apps start to happen? Are there recent changes or updates installed?

The Xbox remote play black screen error occurs due to some software issues with your console, it’s not set up correctly or because of connectivity issues.

I understand that you already exhausted the troubleshooting steps found online. Let us try some other fixes that worked with other Users.

Can you try changing the port your xbox uses in the network settings:

Settings -> General -> Network Settings -> Advanced Settings -> alternate port selection:

Then change the port to ANYTHING else -> press B

**Make sure it says NAT Type: Open

Please make sure you have the Xbox app updated. You can also test it by plugging into a different device and see if problem persists.

However, if this is not the case, the next step is to contact Xbox support for more help. Here is the direct link for Xbox Support: https://support.xbox.com/en-US/contact-us

I hope this is helpful. If you still require assistance, feel free to respond, and I'll be pleased to help.
