Can faulty RAM cause a black screen or freeze the computer?

This laptop has been plagued with BSODs, Black screens, freezing or restarting for no apparent reason for the last 18 months and getting worse the longer i goes.

DaveM121 helped me with identifying a faulty driver which dropped the BSODs dramatically but they still continued. Thanks again Dave, it made it more bearable.

It didn't matter which version of Windows that I ran, I tried different versions of Windows 10 and 11.

I tried different drivers for the graphics cards but the crashes continued to varying degrees.

I decided to remove one of the 16GB memory modules and ran the laptop, but I got another Balck screen or freeze, I',m not sure which as it may have just refused to recover from Sleep mode, and then a BSOD.

I immediately put back the memory module that I had removed and then removed the other.

I have been using the laptop for several days with just this memory module and have only had a single moment when it froze on a black screen but absolutely no BSODs.

I could be wrong but I am starting to think that the memory module that was removed last could be the cause of the BSODs and that I should replace this module.

What I don't know is if this memory module that I am currently using should be replaced as well.

As I said there has been no BSODs but the laptop did freeze while using it.

Both modules were factory so they are the same age and brand.

Could this freeze or black screen be a sign that this memory module that I am using is about to fail?

I understand that nobody can actually tell me what is wrong with this laptop with 100% confidence, so basically I am asking if others with more experience than myself would agree with me in thinking that the RAM is most likely the problem and that it should be replaced.

If so, should I replace both memory modules or just the one that appears to be faulty?

If the opinion is that both RAM modules should be replaced then is it better to have a single 32GB module or two 16GB modules like I currently have?

I do not intend to have more than 32GB as the laptop has never needed more.

ASUS state that the laptop can use a max of 32GB in the form of two 16GB modules, but Crucial claim that it can use their 32GB modules and some retailers sold the laptop with two 32GB modules making it a total of 64GB.

Opinions on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for those commands, they will be useful.

Great i helped. If you like the intel click like and accept as Answer/Solution.

Your max memory is capped out at 32gb. use 16gb to run it in dual channel to get maximum benefits.

I tried them all and found some info that I couldn't get before.

I now know who the manufacturer of the RAM is, Micron Technology

leading American semiconductor manufacturer. Here's the link.

    DRAM micron

Sorry, I should have stated the model.

It's an ASUS TUF A15 506IU Gaming Laptop

I will have had it for 3 years in January next year, so most likely out of warranty now.

Had I realised when it started I may have been able to claim it.

It has been a good laptop until the BSODs started, Probably the best that I have had for performance but not for reliability with these BSODs.

As for the commands, it didn't give me anything useful at first but then I tried different combinations and got this

Caption CreationClassName Depth Description Height HotSwappable InstallDate Location Manufacturer MaxCapacity MaxCapacityEx MemoryDevices MemoryErrorCorrection Model Name OtherIdentifyingInfo PartNumber PoweredOn Removable Replaceable SerialNumber SKU Status Tag Use Version Weight Width

Physical Memory Array Win32_PhysicalMemoryArray Physical Memory Array 3 33554432 33554432 2 3 Physical Memory Array Physical Memory Array 0 3

I don't know if this reply will display it correctly, it appears to be two lines, Headers and info under them.

If my reply is copied and pasted into notepad with Word Wrap turned off it shows correctly, well at least for me it does.

I'm not sure what I am looking at but I believe you were after

    MaxCapacity 33554432

    MaxCapacityEx 33554432

    MemoryDevices 2

Hi, I'm Elise, a fellow user like yourself and I'd be happy to help with your issue.

It certainly could be RAM which is causing the issue, there are utilities which you can use to test the RAM for this type of problem.

This article runs through the steps on how to do this:

    https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/how-to-test...

I would always recommend you go with the laptop manufacturer guidance on the configuration of memory, you can usually download the manual from their website which gives the recommend layout and sizes to use.

I personally wouldn’t put as much trust in the memory manufacturer as with the best will they won’t have tested this on every device the modules will end up in.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Kind Regards,

    Elise

Congrats on figuring out the problem. get the data backup ASAP. i too faced the similar problem but it was well within the warranty so i got it replaced and my data was constantly synced to one drive so no issues there.

What I don't know is if this memory module that I am currently using should be replaced as well.

If its within the manufacturers warranty.

As I said there has been no BSODs but the laptop did freeze while using it.

Both modules were factory so they are the same age and brand.

If it's within the manufacturer's warranty. and does not have any physical tapering you may opt to replace both. But RMA needs to be filed and they will inspect it before replacement.

Could this freeze or black screen be a sign that this memory module that I am using is about to fail?

One thing can lead to another. bad hardware.

If the opinion is that both RAM modules should be replaced then is it better to have a single 32GB module or two 16GB modules like I currently have?

Depends on your needs. the memory upgrade options depends on specific make and model. you just mentioned ASUS no model number nor bios details. so its difficult to comprehend max memory your system supports for now.
