Certain external links wont open to Google Chrome

Hello,

For the past month or so I have been having trouble opening links from external applications with my default web browser (google chrome). When I try to click on a link or a button that redirects to links they do not do anything. If I instead copy the text of the url and paste it into the browser it works completely fine, the only problem is that I have to have access to the actual url it is trying to open to use this getaround. When I try to click the sign in buttons on certain desktop apps (such as spotify and unity hub) nothing happens and the event logs say that chrome had crashed. Keep in mind this isn't for all links because 90% of them work completely fine (usually the sign in ones don't work). If there is anything I can do to fix this please let me know!

Also I was trying to test what kind of links tend to have this problem using reddit links and have found some interesting things. It seems to only happen when there is more than one paramater set after a ? in the url (for my test cases https://stuff//?utm_source=share would work but https://stuff//?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share would not). Hopefully that helps.

Things I've tried:

  • reinstalling all of the apps involved (chrome, spotify, unity hub)
  • reseting to default settings on chrome
  • setting edge as my default browser (would throw same error just with the app being edge)
  • turning off antivirus, browser protection, and firewall

    Hi Nolan Jones1,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

It sounds like there may be a compatibility issue between Google Chrome and certain external applications that are trying to open links in Chrome. One potential solution you can try is to reset the Chrome settings to their default state. Here are the steps to do so:

    1. Open Google Chrome.
    2. Click on the three dots icon in the top right corner of the browser.
    3. Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
    4. Scroll down to the bottom and click on "Advanced".
    5. Scroll down to the "Reset and clean up" section.
    6. Click on "Restore settings to their original defaults".
    7. Click on "Reset settings".

Once you have reset the Chrome settings, try opening the links again and see if they work as expected. If the issue persists, you may want to try using a different web browser to open the links, such as Microsoft Edge or Mozilla Firefox, to see if the problem is specific to Chrome. Additionally, you could try updating the affected applications to their latest versions to ensure compatibility with Chrome. If none of these solutions work, you may want to reach out to the support teams for the affected applications or Google Chrome for further assistance.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, if you have any questions, please feel free to leave us a message.

    Best regards
