Hi I have an existing Local Account (administrator) on my Windows 10 laptop. Is there a way to convert the existing local account to a Microsoft Account , or do I need to first create a new Microsoft Account, then delete the local one. (I want to end up with a single account only on the laptop- a Microsoft administrator account)

If I can convert to a Microsoft account from the existing local account - which is an administrator account- after conversion will the Microsoft account automatically become administrator

Hi, I am Van. I'll be glad to assist you today.

I understand that you want to switch from a local account to Microsoft account. There are two options you can do to change the account.

    A. Switch accounts

    1. Open the Windows settings by pressing the Windows key + I on the keyboard.
    2. Go to Accounts > Your Info.
    3. Under Account Settings, click the "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead" link.
    4. Follow the process to switch to a Microsoft account.

This option will retain your current user profile and still have admin access.

    B. Creating a new account

    1. Press Windows key + r, then type netplwiz then press enter
    2. In the User Accounts window, click the Add button.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a new account.

After you have created the account, highlight it from the list, then click Properties. Go to the Group Membership tab, then select Administrator. Click Apply, Ok.

This option will create a new user profile for the account.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance. I will be glad to help.

Nope, he asked to convert an account, not switch between accounts.

I followed your instructions, but I still can't login to my Microsoft account

    Many thanks Van. Very helpful

Just to clarify—with option A above, after switching accounts will there still be a local account or just the Microsoft one?
