Windows HEIC (Apple photos) Horrible File Management

After paying for the HEIF Image Extension, performance is absolutely horrible.

You'd think that Microsoft would fix this for Windows 11, but reports are that its equally bad.

Disappointing that Microsoft and the Windows product team has made no effort to improve this or fix this.

I'm not opening HEIC files, I'm viewing the folder in Windows File Explorer.

For example I have 1,000 HEIC files in a folder and I'm doing a list view with a few tag columns like "Date Taken".

When scrolling the folder it stalls and takes forever. If I rename some files it takes minutes to display.

JPG or PNG files view pretty quickly.

Windows is the #1 OS and iPhones are the #1 phone with photos in HEIC format. Wish that Microsoft would have done a better job handling HEIC files especially since we still have to pay for the codec,

    Hello MikePBW.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Regarding to your information I assume that your experience of viewing the HEIC images in Windows is terrible.

HEIC is a compressed format with a higher compression ratio compared to the traditional JPG format, allowing for images to be stored

in smaller file sizes. Opening a HEIC file requires decoding to obtain the image, and the speed of this process depends on the decoding

    performance of your CPU.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Hello MikePBW.

    Thanks for your reply.

Because different hardware specificationson Windows systems, the plugin uses software decoding instead of hardware decoding.

The performance of software decoding mainly depends on your CPU. Generally, hardware decoding is much more efficient than

software decoding, so decoding these images on a phone using hardware decoding will be faster than on a computer using software decoding.

The main goal of this plugin is to provide a decoding function for you to view this type of image.

I suggest you provide feedback on this issue to Microsoft through Win+F.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.
