How to fix "Boot Device Not Found"

Hi, my laptop is a HP Pavilion and I use it for animation. It was working fine until it suddenly crashed during a Zoom meeting and it turned off then on again by itself to show me the "Boot Device Not Found" message. I tried watching YouTube videos and reading articles to fix this issue and nothing seems to work. I've tried going into the BIOS Setup and messing around with the Boot Order and that didn't work. Also tried Disabling/ Enabling Secure Boot, (but in the videos it says to Enable/Disable Legacy and my laptop doesn't have that in the setup) and that didn't work. I did the HardDrive tests and it says my Hard Drive 1 Failed... I really hope that doesn't mean its officially crashed and died because I've backed up most but not all of my data/ storage.

The only thing i haven't tried yet is physically opening up my laptop and checking if the Hardrive is out of place somehow.

Hope someone can help with this problem.

:'(

Hi Gianna_004! My name is David. I am a user of Microsoft products like you, and it is a pleasure to greet you.

Thank you for reaching out and detailing the issue you're experiencing with your HP Pavilion laptop. The "Boot Device Not Found" error can be concerning, but I'll do my best to assist you in resolving it.

Given the steps you've already taken, including adjusting settings in the BIOS and conducting hard drive tests, it seems you have a good grasp on some initial troubleshooting methods. The fact that your hard drive test indicated a failure is significant. This often points to a physical problem with the hard drive, which could be due to various reasons, including hardware malfunction or damage.

Here are some steps you can take:

    1. Physical Check: Since you mentioned you haven't checked the physical connection of the hard drive, this should be your next step. Ensure the laptop is turned off and disconnected from any power source. Open the laptop's back panel to access the hard drive. Check if it's securely connected and properly seated. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause this issue.
    2. Try a Different Port or Cable: If your laptop allows, try connecting the hard drive to a different port. If it's a SATA drive, sometimes the issue could be with the port or the connecting cable.
    3. Backup Data: Given that the hard drive has failed the test, it's crucial to back up any data that wasn't already saved. If the laptop isn't recognizing the drive, you might need to connect the hard drive to another computer as an external drive to try and salvage your data.
    4. Replace the Hard Drive: If the hard drive is indeed failing, replacement might be the only solution. Depending on your comfort level and expertise, this can be done at home or by a professional service.
    5. Reinstall Operating System: If you replace the hard drive, you'll need to reinstall your operating system. Ensure you have a recovery drive or installation media for Windows 10.
    6. Seek Professional Help: If you're not comfortable opening up your laptop or handling hardware components, it's advisable to seek professional assistance. They can diagnose the issue accurately and offer solutions.

Remember, handling hardware components requires care and caution. If you're not confident in doing this yourself, it's always safer to consult with a professional technician.

Let me know if the shared information has been helpful. Regards.
