Night Light does not turn off for games on Windows 11

My issue is that Night Light does not turn off automatically when I launch full screen applications, specifically games. In the past, I was using the feature on a system with Windows 10, and it always turned off for games. But since I got a new system with Windows 11, Night Light always stays on, even when playing games, which ruins all the colours in games. I simply deactivated the feature entirely for that reason, hoping this would be fixed at some point. Unfortunately, the issue persists to this day, and I would really like to use the feature again as it was.

The only thing I found in an internet search is that the issue might be related to DirectX 11, but with no solution. Another suggested fix was to turn HDR on and off, which did not help.

I am currently on Windows 11 Ver. 10.0.22631, but like I said, I've had the issue for many versions now.

    Hi Raymus42,

Thank you for getting back to us.

We performed the test on a fresh installation of Windows 11.

The test objects are Devil May Cry 5 and Warframe.

Warframe provides both "DirectX 11" and "DirectX 12 (Beta)" graphics API options.

The test results are the same as those obtained in your device environment. No matter which game it is, whether it is full screen or windowed, and no matter which version of the DirectX graphics interface is used, the night light will not automatically turn off when the game is running.

While exploring for information related to this phenomenon, we discovered another piece of software, as described in the thread below.

Why I can't use Night Light Mode or f.lux while playing games in - Microsoft Community

Cannot use night mode while playing games in full screen - Microsoft Community

After testing, the software does provide the ability to disable picture brightness and color adjustments when running full-screen applications.

    Best Regards,

    Hi again Kyo,

I tried out the f.lux tool mentioned in these threads. After looking through the options, I found that it does have the ability to turn off for fullscreen applications, which works very well so far. I will keep using the tool. Thank you for your help.

    Best regards,

    Raymus

    Hi Kyo,

    thank you for your response.

I checked, if the schedule works, and it seems to do sometimes. I turned Night Light on yesterday and set the schedule to "sunset to sunrise". When I turned my PC on today, Night Light was still on and did not turn off automatically. I then turned it off manually to check if a fixed schedule would work. Again, it did not turn on at the specified time. After that, I turned the "sunset to sunrise" back on, and this time, it turned on automatically, at the right time. I then turned it off and tried specifying a fixed time once more, but it did not turn on automatically again. After several more attempts, I am quite certain that using a fixed schedule with manually specified times does not work at all.

I have tried to run 5 different games now, both older and new games, all in fullscreen mode. Night Light won't turn off for any of them.

The forum entry I found that suggested that it's connected to DX11 is this one:

    https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/topic/102491-dx11-night-light-filter-isnt-turned-off-when-running-in-fullscreen-mode/

Unfortunately, there are no responses to the entry.

The article, which suggested a number of fixes is this one:

    https://www.systweak.com/blogs/windows-night-light-not-working/

Most solutions in this article don't apply to me, since all the settings are already set correctly and my graphics drivers are also up-to-date. I had not tried to delete the registry keys yet, as I had assumed Night Light would be working normally otherwise. Finding now that it also has other issues, not turning on and off automatically, I tried to delete the keys as well. However, this did not help to solve the issue, either.

I cannot confirm if the issue occurs on other Windows 11 devices, since I don't have access to any other PC where I could try to run games, unfortunately.

Something I forgot to mention is that I have two monitors. I had them already when I was using my old Windows 10 system. On that system, Night Light would automatically turn off for the monitor with the game running in fullscreen, while it stayed enabled on the other monitor, which was very convenient.

Thank you again for your time.

Edit: Small update - I found that deleting the registry key broke more things, since I couldn't even enable or disable Night Light manually any more. I did back up the keys, but tried to delete them again first. I also deleted the default$windows.data.bluelightreduction.settings key, even though it was not listed in the article, and after rebooting, manually enabling and disabling worked again. The schedule now also seems to work with manually set times. What still does not work is automatically disabling Night Light for fullscreen games, though.

    Hi Raymus42,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Would you mind sharing more information about this issue with us?

    • If you configure "Schedule night light", will Night light run according to the preset rules in non-game scenarios?
    • Does this phenomenon exist in all games?
    • Would you be comfortable sharing articles you've read or learned about this phenomenon, such as your reference to DirectX 11 and HDR?
    • Will you observe the same phenomenon on other people's Windows 11 devices?

If I misunderstand your situation, feel free to correct me and share the information.

    Best Regards,
