GPU 0 is being completely used while GPU 1 usage is at 0%, how do I fix it?

So, I got a new laptop, which has 2 GPUs: Intel HD Graphics 630 and NVIDIA Quadro M1200. It used to work fine when I got it. But nowadays I've noticed my computer lags a lot while doing anything - opening apps, moving my mouse, or anything that involves screen usage. I thought it was my RAM or CPU causing the problem, but they are completely stable. I opened Task Manager and see that my Intel GPU usage percentage was fluctuating, often peaking at 97%, while my NVIDIA GPU was not being used at all. I believe that to fix this I should make more applications use the NVIDIA GPU, or make it the default GPU. But how do I do that? And is there any other solution?

Notice how the 3D section is being used a lot, even though only apps like Google Chrome and File Explorer are being used. I checked to see what apps are using the GPU the most, and it seems to be the Desktop Windows Manager using most of the GPU capability. Restarting the process did not help.

This problem also fixes itself at random intervals, such as right now, where the Desktop WIndows Manager is only using about 30% of the GPU, but when I open other apps it starts to lag again. Games also break and lag a lot.

    Hi lvkan,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your laptop's GPU performance. It sounds like your laptop is not using the NVIDIA GPU as the preferred graphics processor for most of your applications, which can cause lagging and poor performance. There are a few possible ways to fix this issue:

    1. Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can often cause performance problems. Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for both your Intel HD Graphics and NVIDIA Quadro M1200 GPUs. You can download and install the drivers from the official websites of Intel and NVIDIA.

    1. NVIDIA Control Panel Settings:
      • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel (you can right-click on your desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Panel").
      • Under "3D Settings," go to "Manage 3D Settings."
      • In the "Global Settings" tab, you can set the preferred graphics processor to "High-performance NVIDIA processor." This should help ensure that applications use the NVIDIA GPU when needed.
    2. Windows Graphics Settings:
      • Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings."
      • Scroll down and click on "Graphics settings."
      • Under "Choose an app to set preference," select the application you want to run with the dedicated GPU, and click "Options."
      • Choose "High performance" to use the NVIDIA GPU for that application.
    3. Power Management Settings:
      • Sometimes power management settings can affect GPU performance. Make sure your laptop's power settings are set to High Performance mode when you need optimal performance.
    4. BIOS Update:
      • In some cases, a BIOS update might address compatibility or performance issues. Check your laptop manufacturer's website for any available BIOS updates.

If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.

I hope these methods can help you solve your GPU problem and enjoy a smoother experience on your laptop. If you have any other questions or feedback, please feel free to ask me.

    Your Sincerely

I have tried all of the suggestions in this thread, but the problem remains. Symptoms are just as described in the original post. Opening any window, moving my mouse, scrolling web pages - everything causes the GPU 0 - 3d usage to rise. Trying to have a video meeting in Teams or Zoom is unbearable, my computer lags terribly.

I have Intel UHD Graphics 630 and Nvidia GeForce GTX1650, running Windows 10

Hi, I had the issue but it got solved.

    My specs are Ryzen 9 4000 series/Geforce rtx 2060

My dedicated gpu's usage was on 0 percent and igpu was peaking to 90 percent with one chrome tab opened

I went to device manager and disabled igpu to force my apps use the dedicated gpu but nothing changed

    Graphic settings/change default graphic settins

    I turned off harware-accelerated GPU scheduling(and restarted)but nothing changed.

I also did other stuff like updating driver, etc, and they also did nothing.

I wanted to reset everything and do it all over again cause maybe I missed something.

I enabled IGPU in device manager and turned on harware-accelerated GPU scheduling.after I restarted everything was normal.

I'm not a computer guy but I would say that it's one those bugs that you have to change it and reset it to default again,

Like dns, it works, suddenly it doesn't,reset it and put the dns,and it works:)

Sorry for any misspeling or wrong grammer,my first language is not engilsh.

    Hope I helped Ya;)

    Hi lvkan,

It looks like you've tried multiple solutions and I know the problem still exists. If the Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) is taking up most of the resources of the integrated GPU and causing delays, you can refer to the following link, it's possible that Intel's updated driver is the cause: dwm.exe (Desktop Window Manager) Produces a Memory Leak with Drivers... (intel.com)
