New win11 laptop. My Bitlocker recovery ID is displayed on a couple lines. It is NOT a single line as MS says it is. I've tried entering the elements in different combinations but nothing I try works

You don't use the key ID you use the Recovery key For the sake of an example :

048829-188386-nnnnnn-nnnnnn-nnnnnn-nnnnnn-nnnnnn-nnnnnn as you say the - is entered automatically as you type but all the characters are numbers, under the heading recovery key.

On a phone it looks strange as I found. Have you tried rotating the phone to landscape view instead or portrait.

I’ve only had this Dell win11 laptop for a couple of weeks. Win11 is too far advanced from win10 for my comfort. So I’m just trying to do the factory image restore to make sure none of my data is on the pc.

I don’t recall seeing the original recovery key. These steps took me to the restore screen: WIN, Settings, System, Recovery, Advanced Startup, Restart Now, Choose Option, Troubleshoot, Factory Image Restore, Enter Recovery Key:

On phone type aka.ms/my recoverykey, enter pw and recovery key displays in a five column table: Device Name, Key ID, Recovery Key, Drive, Key Upload Date

Attempt to enter 8 character Key ID but can only enter first six digits, dash is auto displayed and cannot enter any more data. What am I doing wrong?

Perfect, it worked. Thanks so much. Pat

The recovery key is a 48 character numeric key. The ID is to identify the correct key if you have more that one saved to your account.

How or what method do you use to view the recovery key.
