My laptop's fans suddenly increased as well as a massive drop in preformance.

Hello

I'm going to jump straight into the question. What has happened to my laptop all of a sudden? Yesterday, I was playing cyberpunk 2077 in the morning on my laptop with the charge on, background processes closed and no tabs open. The game was running at a smooth 60+ fps when all of a sudden, I witnessed a massive drop in frames (around 50-60%) and my laptop fans started to go insane. This has never happened before. The fans were so loud that I was beginning to get worried for the state of my laptop. I have had this laptop for more than 2 and a half years and never once has it had this bad of a performance. My laptop has an RTX 3050 which can run many games at a decent framerate and I never had any issues with optimization, performance drops or massive stutters. After the incident, I quickly closed the game, closed any open tabs or processes and tried to lower the fan speed through the Acer Nitro sense application, but it didn't work (the fans were still at max speed). So, I decided to turn off the laptop completely and when I switched it back on, everything sounded and looked alright.

However, from that point until today (this incident happened a day ago), every single game I run on this laptop is almost 5 times worse than before the incident. All of my favourite games such as rocket league, Fortnite, Cyberpunk, Roblox, Ready or not, GTA V and so on, no longer reach the frames I used to have. This is the difference in the games I played before vs after:

Fortnite: Before = around 130 fps / After = 70 - 90 fps

Roblox: Before = more than 110 fps / After = 40 fps

Cyberpunk: Before (In small areas for missions) = more than 100 fps / after = less than 30 fps

Ready or not: Before (in the lobby) = more than 120 fps when loaded / after = less than 50 fps

I am heartbroken. To see the laptop that I spent all my savings on suddenly die out on me is just painful. I have been gaming, making content and using 3D softwares such as unreal engine 5, unity and roblox studio for a very long time.

I tried finding a solution by doing these things:

  • Restarting many times
  • Checking and changing power plans, options (anything to do with charge is fine)
  • Unplugging and plugging in the charger
  • Updating drivers
  • Checking for updates
  • Checking for any viruses
  • Deleting any unwanted apps
  • Removing any unnecessary running programs
  • Reinstalling games
  • Checking CPU and GPU temperature
  • Cleaning the ENTIRE outside of the laptop (spotless now)
  • Using a blower to try and clean a little dust inside the laptop
  • Troubleshooting
  • Checking for corrupted files
  • Trying out those weird cmd lines that fix errors
  • Checking the disk and battery condition
  • Reinstalling Norton to check for errors
  • Updating apps
  • Checking if there is a problem with the games
  • Checking anything to do with power, graphics, or processor settings
  • Ensuring that my Laptop is using my RTX 3050 and not my integrated UHD graphics to run games
  • Checking the graphics in the games (DLSS on or off)
  • Hardware acceleration

But still, nothing works.

I am starting to lose hope. Please help me, someone.

    Dear Kyo

I have read your reply and took action in trying to fix the problem. Answers to each of your questions are below:

    1. No there weren't any other events in the device. The only thing I heard and witnessed was the fan speed increasing and the fps dropping massively. Other than that nothing else happened. Outside of the game however, everything seemed to be running smoothly and at the same refresh rate with no stutters (still the same as of now).
    2. Yes the situation is the same when I disabled int graphics. Nothing changed.
    3. No, I don't think installing previous versions of the driver will change anything. I've installed many game ready drivers and only 2 studio drivers since I last got my laptop and none of them seemed to have caused the problem. They were installed every few months.
    4. Yes, the same situation occurs under a new account.
    5. To answer your question, I have taken pictures of the In-Game Performance and Latency Overlay in 3 different games: Cyberpunk 2077, Roblox, Rocket league. They are the easiest to startup and provide the most accurate results.

    Here are the pictures:

    • Roblox:

    • Rocket league:

    • Cyberpunk 2077:

In the last picture, GPU optimization was around 98%, similar to other games. To be honest, I'm not really sure if my GPU power is supposed to be that low and if the GPU optimization is supposed to be close to 100%. I don't have enough knowledge about this to be able to confidently say anything.

    1. Restoring the BIOS parameters? I don't think I'm able to do that at this time as I have a lot of data that needs to be backed up and can't risk anything at the moment. I do not have the product manual. I hope you understand this is something I don't want to touch.
    2. This is what I see in the event viewer. I think this is when the problem first happened. Not really sure what I'm supposed to see here but it looks like there are a lot of errors in the service control thing and the device setup manager.

I think I need to contact a professional hardware support. Replacing the thermal grease as well as cleaning the dust inside the laptop (Many people with an Acer Nitro 5 laptop have the same problem with cleaning and dust) seems to be some of the top answers on the internet, so it looks like that's what I'm going to find out.

    Kindest Regards, abductious z

p.s. Please ignore the image inserted into this reply and look at the images I attached under each of the game titles in the reply.

Thank you for getting back to us.

The 99% FPS parameter provides feedback on the overall operational status of your device.

The values listed in these graphs are at a lower value that matches the symptoms you are experiencing.

In addition, the power consumption of the GPU on your device is at a lower level.

Would you mind sharing your observations after hardware cleaning and hardware inspection?

    Hi abductious z,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

The hardware factor seems to be a factor to consider.

Would you mind sharing more information about this issue with us?

    • Were there any special events in the device other than the abnormal fan speed? For example, system update, driver update, application update, BIOS update?
    • Is the situation the same with integrated graphics disabled?
    • Would things be different if previous versions of the driver (for example, the version of the driver used the first time the device was used) was installed for all components?
    • Does the same situation exist under a new local account? Create a local user or administrator account in Windows - Microsoft Support
    • Will NVIDIA graphics hardware present the same performance results in different scenarios? GeForce Experience In-Game Performance and Latency Overlay | NVIDIA (custhelp.com)

If possible, it's more recommended to contact professional hardware support to perform a hardware cross-test or replace the thermal grease with a new one.

If I misunderstand your situation, feel free to correct me and share the information.
