The user is moved into Windows.old with its folders/files.

If there are folder/files needed that are not within the user profile then some other options to save files are:

    a) moving the disk drive to an empty bay of another computer > copy and paste

    b) moving the disk drive to a HD enclosure > copy and paste

    Number of repair attempts: 49

Startup Repair has tried several times but still cannot determine the cause of the problem.

    1. Find a flash drive that you can format (> or = 8 GB).
    2. Find a working Windows computer.
    3. On the working Windows computer create a bootable Windows Media Creation Tool (MCT) (Windows 10 iso)

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/9230-download-windows-10-iso-file.html

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

    1. Move the flash drive to the problematic computer and boot to the flash drive

    https://www.disk-image.com/faq-bootmenu.htm

    1. Perform a custom installation Windows 10

A custom install is a method to install a fresh version of Windows and save files to Windows.old.

Drivers and applications need to be reinstalled.

Important files are restored from Windows.old.

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/120352-custom-install-windows-10-a.html

    1. Reinstall drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturers website
    2. Reinstall applications
    3. Restore important files from Windows.old

Well First of all Thanks for the quick reply.

I followed your instructions and made a boot drive and tried installing with keeping files but windows just refuses to do so and shows an error. It would be greatly appreciated if you would suggest a way without loss of data

Also how to backup my data?

    Hi Wright,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

It seems that your laptop is encountering startup issues, and the Startup Repair tool has been unable to identify the root cause of the problem. Since you mentioned that common commands like DISM and bcdedit are not working, and the reset option is not successful, we can try some additional steps to troubleshoot and repair the issue.

Performing a repair install, also known as an in-place upgrade, can resolve various system issues without losing your files, applications, or settings. Here's a guide on how to perform a repair install of Windows: How to perform an In-place Upgrade with Windows 10 Step-by-Step Guide - Microsoft Community****

Disclaimer: Please ensure that you backup any important data, including Documents, Pictures, Videos, and more.

I hope this helps.  If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely

Hahn - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
