Not detected correctly: USB 3.0 to DVI Lenovo adapter on Windows 10/Lenovo laptop dock

Using the "Lenovo USB 3.0 to DVI/VGA Adapter" (M/N AN9017D1, ASM P/N 0B58393) on a ThinkPad T480s dock, the drivers became corrupt and were uninstalled/removed.

Upon attempting to install the latest driver from either Lenovo, DisplayLink, or Synaptics the results give the same Device Manager error:

"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

The device is recognized as a DisplayLink USB device enlisted twice - the same issue happens on any USB port either on the laptop or dock.

However, when loading an older Lenovo driver it is correctly identified as a "Lenovo USB3.0 to DVI/VGA Adapter" but it is under the [USB display adapter] section and is not recognized by Windows as another display. These were the new drivers that were installed and tested:

Lenovo DisplayLink USB https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t480s-type-20l7-20l8/20l8/20l8s35m00/pc1552wj/downloads/automatic-driver-update
Synaptics

DisplayLink https://www.synaptics.com/products/displaylink-graphics/downloads/corporate

The USB adapter works perfectly; in another Windows 10 machine, it is detected and usable without installing any drivers. Any help is welcome! Thanks.

Thanks Lenka. After some substantial cleaning and running these commands: (because I noticed that reboots were failing to perform an update and getting rolled back).

    • cleanmgr
    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    • sfc /scannow
    • Delete SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION Folder

Upon a reboot, the USB-DVI adapter started working immediately. I then took a restore point!

    Thanks!

    Matt

    Hello MattS_DOS622,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and we regret the inconvenience caused to you.

The issue appears to be related to your Windows because it works fine on another machine.

How long has this issue occurred?

Solution 1: Please remove your USB driver in Device Manger and re-identify it to see if this issue can be resolved.

Solution 2: Please perform a clean boot and close any non-Microsoft third-party apps, then connect your device again.

These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by step so that it will help you get you back on track.

Solution 3: Make sure you cleared the USB drive and refer to this thread then create to a new Windows Profile to check. Please don’t be depressed and have a nice day!

    Best Regards,

    Lenka-MSFT| Microsoft Community Support Specialist
