Why can't I play my game?

I have a custom built PC that my IT friend and I built together. We bought and installed Windows 11 Pro and all modern games work really well and what not. However; when I tried playing Fallout 3 GOTY Edition through Steam it would open with the screen that displays play and what not, and then go away with nothing happening after pressing play. I looked at some online answers and my friends, most of what I found was in giving the launcher full access but nothing changed. There was a section in the Compatibilities Section that allowed me to "run" the program on some old windows. I just spent $200 on this new windows and would rather not mess things up so any help would be appreciated greatly.

My PC System is:

Processor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700K 3.40 GHz

Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor Edition

Windows 11 Pro

Version 23H2

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22681.1000.0

Going by the specs you posted, I assume you are using Intel UHD graphics. I am using the original disc based version and don't know

if the current version Steam is using has been fixed to allow Integrated gpu's, but...

Fallout 3 will not run on integrated graphics without using the fix below.... I have tested this fix successfully with my Intel UHD 770 graphics.

    https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/17209

    • Also get the Unofficial Patch from Nexus while you are there. This will help with other bugs that may or may have not been

fixed in the version being used by Steam.

btw - The game will run fine on Win11 without using Compatibility settings.

Randomly over break the game was playing fine when I didn't do any changes to it, and when I tried to replay it, it once again stopped working. I went down your list of possible reasons it wouldn't work but I haven't found a successful way to fix whatever the issue is.

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

It seems like you're having trouble playing Fallout 3 GOTY Edition on your newly built PC with Windows 11 Pro installed. This could be due to a variety of reasons, and I'll try to provide a few general solutions to your problem.

    1. Compatibility Issue: Fallout 3 was released long before Windows 11. Therefore, it might not be fully compatible with your current operating system. You mentioned a compatibility mode for older versions of Windows. Don't worry, this won't mess up your new Windows 11. It just provides an environment for the game to run as if it were on an older version of Windows. You can right-click on the game's executable file, select 'Properties', go to the 'Compatibility' tab and then select a version like Windows 7 or XP to see if that helps.
    2. Run as Administrator: You mentioned giving the launcher full access, but ensure you're also running the game as an administrator. Right-click on the game's executable and choose 'Run as administrator'.
    3. Update Graphics Drivers: Make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers could cause compatibility issues with certain games.
    4. Verify Game Files: In Steam, you can verify the integrity of your game files. This will check for any missing or corrupted files and replace them.
    5. Install Games for Windows Live (GFWL): Fallout 3 requires GFWL to run. Even though the service is discontinued, the game still requires its presence. You can download it and then try again.

    Best regards
