Why does my Lenovo PC refuse to boot up when I have USB devices connected to the computer?

Hi everyone,

I have a Lenovo PC running Windows 11 and I have noticed that sometimes if I have some USB devices for example an external hard drive and other items that my computer will not boot up and the screen stays black.

I contacted Lenovo support about this and they said that its because I have these USB devices plugged in that my computer will not boot up. They told me that I had to unplug the computer from the mains and then press the power button to drain any power from the on/off button at the back of the computer.

But I would like to know why this is happening in the first place? It hasnt happened when I had previous computers and the strange thing is that sometimes with the USB devices connected it will boot up successfully and sometimes it will not so it will be great to know what is causing this issue and how I can fix it?

Many thanks.

All I could think is that the USB is set as the first boot device in the bios. But it would be odd for it not to ignore the USB if it is not a boot device.

Was Windows 11 supplied pre-installed on the device?

Can you enter the bios during boot (you will need to select Start > Power > Restart) then tap the F11 or F12 key during power on until the bios menu appears. Check the boot order in the bios menu and see what it shows.

If it can happen with any USB external drive then you could take a screenshot of the USB in File Explorer, then upload the image to the forum in your reply.

If I see a file then I can let you know.

Usually Autorun is part of a program package so if you don't have any program installation packages on the external drive then it won't be that.

I don't think windows updates will be affecting the USB drives being connected. Certainly is a strange one.

I can only think of when I installed Windows 7 many years ago on a new drive I couldn't understand why the installation wouldn't continue and that turned out to be a USB external drive. I disconnected it and the install went ahead as normal.

Don't think that has ever been a problem in Windows 10 or 11.

I accessed the Bios and here is what I saw:

    START UP DEVICE MENU:

M.2 Drive 1-[ Windows Boot Manager]

Network 1-[UEFI: PXE IPV4 Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller]

Network 1-[UEFI: PXE IPV6 Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller]

    HELLO James Griffith1

DESPITE THE APPEARANCE OF THE DEVICE. Lenovo they use difficult function settings/definitions, they are not bad, but they are designed for office work and it's annoying that adapting them for home use needs editing, which on the other hand slows down when you are told to do this / verify / right of use/ .
