Mouse Double-Clicking when Single-Clicked

This issue began about a month ago and I have been dealing with it ever since, and I am at my wits end trying to resolve it. I have researched, read multiple solutions, and implemented quite a few of them to resolve the double clicking issue but none of them have worked. Below are the details of my system and the things I have tried what I have tried:

MY SYSTEM INFO

Device name     *** Deleted as it relates to personal privacy ***

Processor           Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz   2.81 GHz

Installed RAM   32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)

Device ID

Product ID

System type       64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Pen and touch   No pen or touch input is available for this display

Edition  Windows 11 Home

Version 23H2

Installed on       ‎12/‎20/‎2023

OS build              22631.2861

Experience         Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22681.1000.0

I am running an extended monitor (The issue is present on both)

Monitors            (Primary) Acer VG280K 4K Monitor (3840 x 2160 Resolution) (Mounted Horizontal/Landscape)

                           (Secondary) Dell P2412H 1080 Monitor (1080 x 1920 Resolution) (Mounted Vertically/Portrait)

THINGS I HAVE TRIED

  • I did install a new graphics card and drivers recently and thought perhaps this might be the issue until I removed it and reinstalled the old one, but the issue did not change, it still double-clicked.
  • I tried using different USB ports, both 2.0 and 3.0 – No change
  • I bought a new Mouse Pad
  • Installed a brand new optical mouse – No change, problem still exists
  • Updated mouse Drivers directly from Dell Computer – No change
  • Swapped monitors around to see if that had something to do with the issue, no change.
  • Swapped monitor cables also to see if that had something to do with the issue, no change.
  • Turned off the “Snap Windows” in the Multitasking menu as suggested – Did not resolve anything.
  • Restarted Windows several times…
  • Ran a malware scan using ESET. Used scanners from both the one installed on my machine and their online scanner just in case some malicious code disabled the scanner on my computer – No malicious activity was found.
  • I changed the click settings using the “Mouse Properties” menu several times. I finally set the double-click to “Slow” (all the way to the left) to try and get get the issue to repeat itself.  While clicking on the folder icon to test the double-click speed, I purposely clicked the mouse button really slow, just like you would when you single-click and the folder would open and close sporadically despite this. It should only click on a Double-Click but I was able to repeat the issue even though it was sporadic. I recorded the click issue using your ‘Steps Recorder”. Hopefully it will give you some insight to the issue. Link to Recording - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ae_fgChWBtivOTCgWZPkN0b-3wjoplVX/view?usp=sharing
  • Out of desperation, I went to aka.ms/DownloadWindows11 and “repaired” my Windows 11 Home Edition, Version 23H2 installation but that did not fix the issue either
  • I also read that old installations are retained in the Device Manager so I opened Device Manger, clicked on “Show Hidden Devices” and removed all grayed-out items just in case the system was trying to still use old installations of Mice, Displays, or their Drivers. This did not work either.

Please Heeeeeelp!

    Hello,Mark Bruno1

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

Thank you very much for your detailed description and testing, we will try our best to help you, we accessed the Google Drive link you provided but do not have permission to access the file you shared, please can you turn on the share view permission so that we can further understand your problem.

If it is convenient, please try to connect to another system with that mouse and check if it will double click.

Then exclude any third-party software interference, start cleanly first, and then directly test whether the problem exists. For details, please refer to: How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

Finally, please follow the instructions below to enter Safe Mode and perform the test, which will detect the problem with a minimum of basic device drivers:

1.Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to switch off your device.

2.Press the power button again to turn the device on.

3.Immediately after you see Windows start up (e.g., some devices display the manufacturer's logo on reboot), press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.

4.Press the Power button again to turn the device on.

5.During a Windows reboot, press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.

6.Press the Power button again to turn the device on.

7.Allow the device to reboot to auto-repair and then select "Advanced Options" to enter winRE.

Once in winRE, on the "Select Options" screen, select " Troubleshooting > Advanced Options" > "Startup Settings" > Reboot". After the device reboots, you will see a list of options. Select "5" from the list or press F5 to enter Safe Mode with Networking. Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode?

All of the above tests will help us to understand this problem and we are looking forward to your tests.I wish you all the best and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, I look forward to hearing from you which will determine where we go next!

    Best Regards,

    Hello Rota Ye,

Actually, I think I solved the problem!

From your previous suggestion, I disabled all of the Startup Apps except one, ecmds.exe because I was not allowed to - ecmds.exe is associated with my antivirus program ESET. So I went ahead an uninstalled ESET to remove it from my Startup list. After rebooting my computer, the double-clicking issue went away!

I then reenabled all of the apps I disabled previously but did not reinstall ESET. I then rebooted my computer and tested for the double-click issue and found no issue, my mouse was acting normal.

I then reinstalled ESET and rebooted my computer once again and the double-clicking issue was back!

    To be sure I...

    Uninstalled ESET - Issue gone.

    Reinstalled ESET - Issue back.

    Uninstalled ESET - Issue gone.

So it looks as if ESET has a compatibility issue with Windows or the Chrome Brower. I did not try testing this issue using the Edge Browser.

If my system begins to act up again, I will repost.

Thank you for all you expert help!

    Sincerely,

    Mark

    Hello,Mark Bruno1

Thank you for your reply. From the log you provided it does recognise that it is a double click action, so we still need you to test the steps mentioned in your last reply.

In addition, we would also like you to take a look at:

    • From the Start icon > Settings > Bluetooth & Other Devices > Mouse > Other Mouse Settings > Tick "Switch Primary and Secondary Buttons", in this way we switch the left and right buttons, and then you can test how your left and right buttons function in this case.
    • Then you test, will be the page of the "double-click speed" adjusted to "fast" to see.

Looking forward to your test and reply!

    Best Regards,
