Can't change metadata in Window 10

I'm trying to add a rating to an MKV video file using the five stars.

However I can't access them (or any other metadata) using Windows Explorer.

I have checked that I own the files and that they are not read only.

When I go to the file's Properties the dialog has General/Details/Previous Versions as tabs and when I go into Details the metadata is listed.

However when I right click on a field it highlights but I can't alter it.

Please help

you can use dedicated tools like MKVToolNix or VLC media player, which offer metadata editing capabilities.

Actually, no, editing metadata through VLC currently (2023) only changes the metadata in the current playlist, it does not save the changes to the file. This has been a reported bug/shortfall since at least 2010.

Thanks for the quick reply, Mostafa.

I've tried VLC, Bridge, Media Monkey, Metadata++, MKVToolNix and a few others.

Some of them do edit the rating field and seem to save but when reloaded the saves haven't saved.

I would add that the permissions on the files read: everyone.

Hello! My name is Mostafa, and I will try my best to assist you with this so that you find a satisfactory solution.

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue. Windows Explorer has limited support for editing metadata of specific file formats, including MKV. To change the metadata of an MKV video file, you can use dedicated tools like MKVToolNix or VLC media player, which offer metadata editing capabilities. Alternatively, you can use MediaInfo to view the existing metadata. These tools provide a more effective way to modify the metadata of MKV files.

I hope this help. Let me know if you have more questions. Thank you.

    Best,

    Mostafa

Thank you for the feedback. It's possible that the issue lies with the files themselves or their permissions. Right-click on the MKV file, select "Properties," go to the "Security" tab, and verify that you have full control or write permissions for the file. You can modify the permissions to grant yourself the required access if necessary.

Create a backup copy of the MKV file and attempt to edit the metadata on the copied version. Sometimes, the original file may be locked or have specific attributes that prevent changes, but copying it might resolve the issue. If possible, try converting the MKV file to a different format, such as MP4, and see if you can successfully edit the metadata of the converted file. Some tools may have better support for metadata editing in specific file formats.

The MKV file itself may be corrupt or have issues that prevent metadata changes from being saved. Try playing the file in a media player to ensure it's working correctly. If the file is corrupted, you may need to obtain a new copy or consider re-downloading it.

If none of these steps resolves the issue, it's possible that the MKV files have certain properties or metadata settings that prevent them from being edited using the tools you have tried. In such cases, you may need to explore specialized MKV metadata editing software.
