MS Paint default file save type to JPG?

On Vista it's not an issue since it is set to JPG as a default. What about Windows 10?

Otherwise, I need help to know if following (intended for XP) applies to Windows 10?

  1. Open a blank screen in Paint and save it as a .jpg in the location you want as your default with the name "default.jpg".
  2. Right click and drag the Paint program from the Start, Programs,
Accessories location onto the desktop and select copy here.
  3. Right click on the Paint icon and then left click Properties. You should see a line like this "%SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe" (without the quotes.)
  4. Place the cursor after the .exe and type a space.
  5. Type the full path and filename for the default.jpg file you saved (if there is any spaces in the path you need to enclose anything you type in quotes. The final line should look like this

%SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe "C:\this is the path here\default.jpg"

6.click OK.

Double click on the new desktop icon, the file will open and the Save As default location will be where the file is located. If you make the default.jpg read only, you won't inadvertently change the file and a Save As will then pop up for any attempt to Save.

    Hi panes-rubic,

Similar to your description, my main point is that if the device is not online, the files will not be synced.

    Best Regards,

Thank you for getting back to us.

Directories associated with OneDrive are a situation we have not yet tested.

The OneDrive directory may involve a internet-based sync status change.

Personally only, I'd go with other offline directories.

    Thanks Kyo,

Would you explain more about "OneDrive directory may involve a internet-based sync status change"; if you meant unavailability of this JPG file when offline, this is OK because my JPG file is for upload.

I do not need JPG when my computer cannot go online.

    Hi panes-rubic,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Thank you for sharing alternative ideas for modifying the default save type for the Paint app.

In Windows 10, Paint's save type needs to be selected manually.

In our test environment, the test results were successful.

The test environment and test objects are shown in the following information and images.

    • Desktop was used as the directory for testing.
    • Send the Paint shortcut from the Start Menu directory to the desktop to get a shortcut similar to the path "%SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe". In our test environment, the path is "%windir%\system32\mspaint.exe".
    • The full path is as follow, with the username replaced by an * and a space between the original and the appended content. The full path does not contain quotation marks.
      %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe C:\User*\Desktop\default.jpg
    • The system version information is shown below.

If I misunderstand your situation, feel free to correct me and share the information.

    Best Regards,
