How do I turn off two step verification for my email addresses on all Microsoft websites?

I have a few email addresses that I occasionally use on Microsoft websites. One I have defined as a personal account and it works fine. The others I defined as associated with my company. Those stopped working due to the authenticator app. If I try to add them to the Autenticator app it asks me to scan a company QR code. I have no idea what is supposed to be in that. If I click on the I don't have access to the Authenticator app it gives me a code to enter into the Authenticator app which doesn't seem to have an input form for it.

I have been using Microsoft products since the beginnings of DOS and have not seen this kind of tail chasing security issue. How do I get around it?

    >If that is the case, your IT Administrator has enabled and enforced Microsoft 2FA authentication on your account
I run a one-man consulting company. As a result, I am the IT Administrator. As near as I can tell the three email accounts that I use are defined exactly the same, except for the name, on the email server.

I think I made the mistake of telling Microsoft that the two email accounts with the problem are company accounts. Will changing them to personal accounts as far as Microsoft is concerned fix the problem? If so, how do I do that?

    I don't use Microsoft 365.

    >the code to your recovery phone number or recovery email address

Sending to the recovery phone number doesn't work. The authentication app shows a pair of large hex digits which it says I can use to login without a password. The recovery email address works.

Still trying to get the other email addresses working.

    Dear Sabeman,

Thank you so much for your reply!

With the admin, Microsoft account you're trying to log in, and it gives you an error message, which means it is a personal account that requires login via Office.com. The issue is related to authentication approval, as the account is not added to your phone's Microsoft authentication app or is not showing up in the app.

So, you're unable to log in due to 2FA authentication approval. On your phone, the Microsoft authentication app lacks the same account setup. However, while attempting to log in, it still asks you to approve or enter the code from the 2FA authentication app, correct?

If that is the case, it is indeed challenging to log in to your account. Have you explored alternative options during the login process, such as sending the code to your recovery phone number or recovery email address?

    Warm Regards,

    Arif

    Dear Sabeman,

Thank you so much for your reply!

Since you mentioned being the IT administrator, please try logging into your account via the link below. On the left side of your screen, do you see "Show all" and then "Users" and "Active users"?

    https://admin.microsoft.com/

If you don't see such options and considering you're not using a Microsoft 365 account, indicating a personal Microsoft account, and you want to turn off 2FA authentication, please click on the link below. Log in to your account and then navigate to the "Additional security" section. Try turning off the "Two-step verification" or, under "Ways to prove who you are," check the authentication methods you have set up. You can remove them one by one. However, please note that for this, you need to access your account on a web browser. When it asks for authentication approval, ensure to approve it; otherwise, accessing your account with this page won't be possible.

Regarding your question, "Will changing them to a personal account...," could you please provide more details? I didn't fully understand your question.

As you attempt to sign in to your Microsoft account, is it your work account or personal account? After entering your login details, do you see the prompt "Set up your Microsoft 365 sign-in for multi-factor authentication"?

    Warm Regards,

    Arif

Greetings, Saberman! My name is Arif, and I will assist you today.

I hope I understand your concern well. What you mean is that with your personal Microsoft account, everything is fine meaning it is not asking for 2FA authentication verification. However, with your company Microsoft account, it is prompting you to set up the 2FA authentication app via the QR code, even though you entered your Microsoft account details correctly. When you log in, it asks you to set up 2FA authentication, requiring you to scan the QR code.

If that is the case, your IT Administrator has enabled and enforced Microsoft 2FA authentication on your account, compelling you to set up the Microsoft 2FA authentication app. You can ask them to enable it only from the admin portal or you need to download the Microsoft Authentication app on your phone and set it up.

Once the Microsoft Authentication app is downloaded, open it, click on the + icon, choose a work or school account, and then select the QR code from your account that is requested on the web browser of your computer. Scan the QR code via your phone, and then it will prompt you to verify or approve the account.

Set up your Microsoft 365 sign-in for multi-factor authentication:

    Warm Regards,

    Arif
