I use the preview pane extensively in Windows Explorer. In Win10 Explorer, it was relatively easy to access, and you could also pin it to the QAT.

Win 11, explorer, this option disappeared.

Recently, I have see at the top of explorer, seemingly randomly changing between Preview, Details and also OneDrive.

How do I force Explorer to show the Preview shortcut, not Details or OneDrive?

one of the many 'legends in their own lunchtime' who are paid to make changes with zero regard or independent assessment of how it affects usability. "Different is always better" apparently. There are an infinite number of ways to hide familiar controls in unfamiliar places, lets try them all. /rant

This ought to be automatic. Who made the decision to turn off this extremely helpful feature?

There are folks that don't want to see the ICON anymore. You used to be able to remove it, so you do not see the icon (as you noted above). The option you suggest is NO LONGER available. The option is no longer in the drop-down menu under SHOW. Once you have chosen Preview Pane OR Details, a small dot appears to the left. The icon appears, and from that point on, you will always SHOW the Details or Preview panes - a toggle and not a choice to NOT show the icon. You can hide the information in the body of the window, but you can't remove the icon.

Is there some other setting or registry setting that will put it back to a point where the ICON no longer appears in File Explorer?

    THANKS!
