How do I regain the funcionality of the X button to close a windows program?

I do not know what all programs this affects, but the one I have problems with is Notepad.

It used to be, when I was done with whatever in Notepad, I could click the X button the one in the upper right corner of the program, to close it. It would ask if I wanted to save any changes. The options would be to save, not to save, or to cancel (the close)

Now, however, when I click the x button. it does something. It closes the window, but not the program? but the program is no longer running as far as I can tell. so when I open up the same document I just closed, it opens up a New Tab in notepad. with none of the changes I made saved. But also has the previous instance open from where I Did make those changes.

How do I get the x back to just asking me if I want to save, and closing the program? and how do I setup notepad to open each file independently instead of in tabs like its a web browser?

It is very important to me that you can select YES in the bottom left corner of any of my messages.

Why? Isn't that used for replies that were helpful or solved my problem? They didn't show up on my reply from what I recall. Unless I just can't choose my own replies as the one that solved my problem.

    Dear Katerpie

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

Regarding your question, it is recommended that you open the main text file program and in the upper right corner - Settings - Files Being Opened - Set to - Open in New Window.

When Notepad starts up - set it to Open in New Window.

This way he will revert to the base mode - you can close any TXT file, other TXT files will not be closed.

I hope this setting will help you.

NEVERMIND! after I finished typing this out i started screwing around in notepad. Since there is No Longer a settings menu In Any of the normal menus, I thought it just didnt have in program settings anymore. Little did I know they removed the settings option from the menus, and just made its own little icon no where near where one would normally look for a programs settings...
