Hi,

Normally when you buy a new phone. You can just use a tool and your new phone gets a 1:1 copy of your old phone. Now I bought a new laptop. I just want everything 1:1 from my old laptop to my new laptop. Everything all user files all settings everything. Is that already possible like how we do it with phones or with a backup or something?

Let me know!

Regards,

Bram

    Hey Bram!

My name is Ravi, and I am an independent advisor. I am happy to help you. :)

Mirroring a laptop to another laptop isn't like mirroring a phone. Getting everything from one laptop to another requires a few steps:

1). Backup the data from your old laptop.

2). Transfer the data to your new laptop.

For users and other settings, you need to add them manually because every laptop has a different configuration. And both might have different versions of Windows.

There are different ways to transfer the data.

1). Copy everything into an external USB or hard drive. Paste the data to your new laptop.

2). Use cloud storage to sync the data and then sign into your new laptop using the same account. At present, the most stable and safe way is to use Onedrive to back up your old computer's data and files, and then use Onedrive to sync to your new computer. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/transfe...

Feel free to get in touch again if you have any additional questions.

    Cheers,

    Ravi

I would also like to mention that "Settings are automatically synced to Microsoft account between the devices". It means if you use the same Microsoft account on your new laptop, all its account settings will be like your older laptop.

It is possible to make an image copy of one computer and restore that to another. Windows is actually quite good at resolving driver differences for different hardware. However, that approach is still considered something for power users because it only should be done if the source machine had a "clean" Windows install (i.e. it's free of OEM specific bloatware). And there are other "gotchas" that are too much detail to get into here.

In general, the safest way to migrate is to use a USB drive to copy all your data from the old machine to the new. That way, you also get a backup of your data in the process. And, yes, there is still the pain of installing software and getting your settings as you like, but it's also a good opportunity to streamline and clean things up.

If you are interested in the learning more about using imaging to migrate, I suggest heading over to elevenforum.com where there are users with direct experience doing just that.
