Windows update fails every single day to install 'Feature update to Windows 10, version 22H2 (2)'

Hi

At my wits' end here. For months now, I've been asked to restart my PC daily for this update. Every day I do, and every day it fails. I've searched around online and tried everything I can find, including:

  1. Windows update troubleshooter
  2. Opening a cmd prompt and inputting recommended commands manually
  3. Deleting entire folders of previous updates

Nothing works. Every day it's the same request to update and the same subsequent failure. The error message is always the same:

"Failed to install on ‎19/‎01/‎2024 - 0x80004005"

Some updates, to Defender Antivirus for example, still apparently work. But this one, and some others such as "Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2" also fail to install - presumably because they are dependent upon the main update which won't install.

Anyway, I'd be really grateful if someone has found a fix for this.

Thanks again, but still no dice. This time it got all the way to 80% of the install before I got the "Installation Failed" message.

I suspect I may be running into hardward issues. My processors are pretty old : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz

And the motherboard will be similarly about 8 years old. Perhaps that's just getting too long in the tooth to deal with the windows updates. But nothing on earth appears able to get this update to install!

Click your Start Button, type cmd then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run this command and hit Enter:

    net stop wuauserv

    Leave Command prompt open

Open File Explorer, on the View ribbon, temporarily turn on 'Hidden Items'

    Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Delete the entire contents of the Download folder

    Close File Explorer

In Command Prompt, run this command and hit Enter:

    net start wuauserv

When that completes, close Command Prompt and restart your PC

    Then try that update again.

Thanks for the reply. I tried this, but sadly failed. I followed all the steps, and got up to the installation process with blue screen telling me my PC would restart repeatedly. Then I received a simple message saying "Windows Installation has failed", and it returned me to the existing state.

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

With these major upgrades like version 22H2, the most successful method is to upgrade from the Windows 10 ISO - you download the ISO and then perform an Offline Upgrade

Please follow the steps, this is then not like re-installing Windows, it is just like an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

    Click this link:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), then choose ISO, not USB

When the ISO file completes downloading

    Disconnect from the Internet

Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the upgrade option.
