How do I prevent my computer from shutting down and all my applications from closing?

Hi,

I've been looking at various forums and questions to try and solve this issue, but nothing is working.

My laptop (windows 10) has recently been shutting down completely when I close the lid and has been for the past week or so. My power settings indicate that when I close the lid it should enter sleep mode. These settings have not changed since I got the laptop. I saw recommendations to put close lid settings to "do nothing", however I don't want to do this as I am a college student who usually carries my laptop around a lot and often doesn't plug it in all the time. Additionally, whenever I close my lid it closes all of my applications. ie all of my chrome tabs, microsoft office, etc. This is very annoying for me as a student who frequently goes from class to class.

In trying to fix this issue my computer has blue screened a few times as well, to which I "restarted my pc". I checked for malware in which I found none. I also am up to date on all drivers for my laptop. Yet I am still having this issue. Please let me know how I can fix this. I'd like to maintain how it functioned originally if possible. Thanks.

    Hi KR00,

From your description of the operation, yes, this is all correct.

I also confirmed the corresponding Settings of my laptop, my Settings are exactly the same as yours, and I can go to sleep normally without losing all the applications I open.

So, at the moment maybe I would consider whether there are other factors that affect all of this, for example, the power drive.

Although you have previously stated that you have updated all the drivers in your laptop, I recommend that you try to visit the laptop manufacturer's website, download the power driver for the device model, and reinstall it. This may improve the situation.

    Hi,

I'm not sure if I did this correctly, but my laptop is set to enter sleep mode when I close the lid (unplugged and when connected to power) and also set to enter sleep mode when I press the power button (connected and unconnected to power). My laptop does not automatically shut down when on low power, but it does turn off when the battery dies.

    Hello KR00,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I very much understand your need to carry a laptop with you and if the cover is set to "Do nothing" it is a very battery draining setting that will drastically drain the power reserve in the battery.

I know this makes you feel uncomfortable, but just as a personal recommendation, I highly recommend carrying a power adapter in your laptop bag to avoid losing important data or running out of power in the middle of your work.

In response to your question, I may need to explain to you the standby state of the laptop and the difference between sleep and hibernation, if you are patient and willing to learn about this, you can carefully read the information in the following links:

Shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC - Microsoft Support

System power states - Win32 apps | Microsoft Learn

The link describes the standby state S0-S5, corresponding to the working state, sleeping state, and hibernation state respectively.

Therefore, you first need to confirm that you have properly set up the closed sleep action by following the linked instructions.

Second, check if the standby state of your computer has been changed.

Finally, check to see if your laptop automatically shuts down due to low battery.

Also, as an added tip, if you are used to Office software, get in the habit of Ctrl+S whenever you edit or change a document, which is the shortcut key for quick save. For the browser, please set the browser to automatically open the page that was not closed last time when you open the browser again. This can effectively prevent misoperation from closing the page that was opened.
