How do you download SMB2 protocol into Windows 11?

I am getting this Windows error message when I try to open up an external hard drive. "An error occurred while reconnecting Y: to \MYCLOUDEX2Ultra\Public Microsoft Windows Network: You can't connect to the file share because it is not secure. This share requires the obsolete SMB1 protocol, which is unsafe and could expose your system to attack. Your system requires SMB2 or higher. For info on resolving this issue, see: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=852747  This connection has not been restored."

Microsoft helped me get rid of the SMB1 feature (unchecking box, etc.), but did not help with loading the SMB2. I was told to come to this forum.

I tried one Powershell set of commands, but it gave me a "false" response. The hard drive company ran troubleshooting yesterday and did not find anything to fix.

Help!

Whether or not the NAS supports SMB2 depends on the NAS drive and not windows. (check the NAS website)

SMB1 is disabled by default but you can enable it in Control Panel > Program and Features > Turn windows features on or off.

If you need to access the NAS that does not support SMB2 then you need to turn on SMB1 in windows.

I don't know why WD would pass the buck, the setting is in their device.

Hopefully the Microsoft rep can point you in the right direction.

I'm not a techy. First, I had to look up the definition of NAS. I guess you are saying that my external hard drive needs to be checked? I did have the company troubleshoot the problem the other day and he did not find anything.

Why would I want to re-enable SMB1 if it is obsolete? I need SMB2 or greater according to the Microsoft error message.

I guess I will go to the website of the external hard drive and see what I can find out.

What you have is a network attached storage device. That device will determine whether it supports SMB1 or (the newer) SMB2, You are correct in that you need to go to the manufacturers website for the external device to see if it will support SMB2. It may be a firmware update is required or, depending on the age it may only support SMB1.

If it is SMB1 only then you have no option but to enable windows support for SMB1, or you cannot use it to connect to windows.

If it has the option to enable SMB2 (either after an update, or currently) will depend on the settings of the device and not windows.

If you can post the make and model of the external drive then I may be able to find it and help you with the detail. Approximately how old is the external drive?
