Chrome stuck on white screen at start up

Hello,

My google chrome is stuck on a white screen at start up, and I am at my wits ends on how to fix it. I have done lots of reading online, and none of the fixes have worked. These include but are not limited to:

  • Running the short cut in compatibility mode and as an administrator
  • Opening an incognito window
  • Testing if other browsers work (they do)
  • A complete, fresh install
  • Chrome runs fine on my Macbook
  • Rename user data folder (it does not even delete the old one after I boot up chrome...)

I cannot even access my settings or anything. If I minimize and reopen the window it turns black.

I have read just about every forum post online, so seriously, what do I do next?

Sincerely,

From one Chrome user to another

Web search: KB5034129 on Server 2022 causes Chrome to crash.

    (White Screen etc)

    This fixed it for us:

Remove the reg key "chrome.exe" here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options

    Hello Chris
I have to thank you, removing the registry keys "chrome.exe", "msedge.exe" and "msedgewebview2.exe" from:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
did solve the problem on this upgraded installation of Windows Server 2022.

After this change I was able to successfully install and run both Google Chrome (from Enterprise .msi-package) and the latest version of Microsoft Edge.

Thank you for posting a working solution!

    Best regards, Stefan

This also worked for me! I don't know who or why that registry key got set. It seemed to only contain one value "MaxLoaderThreads=0x1", but that was the culprit. Thank you so much for providing this information.

    Hello Greg,

Thank you for the reply, here are my experiences with each step you put forth:

    1. Not relevant, done this on laptop already.
    2. Cannot due this given I cannot access Chrome settings.
    3. Cannot due this given I cannot access Chrome settings.
    4. I already indicated in my post that I did a fresh install of Chrome, but for the sake of your kind advice I did it again and it still did not solve my problem.

Do you have any other possible suggestions?

    Thank you so much Greg.
