My pc is only running at 100 mbps max, how do I fix this?

Hello,

I have a gaming computer that I build about a year ago. Ive had it plugged in the entire time to ethernet and never really noticed but I did a speed test and it was only getting 95 mbps. I pay for gigabit and all my other pcs around the house all get 800+ mbps. I checked the properties of this computer and under link speed, it says 100/100 mbps and not 1000.

Ive attempted to do research online for it but have found nothing that has worked. I checked the advance section of the configuration of the ethernet under speed and duplex and its set to auto. I attempted to change it to 1 Gb but the ethernet stopped working at that point and I had to change it back to auto to fix it.

I checked the ethernet wall plug that goes back to our media cabinet where the switch is, with a ethernet tester and its saying all looks good. I also tested the cable running from the wall plug to the pc and that checks out too. I changed it just in case and its still not working.

Help, Please.

    Hi, everyone,

It is not the cable, it is the configuration of the Network adapter.

    You need to:

    • go to the Search bar, bottom left corner, and type Device Manager.
    • once opened, go under Network adapters, and find your network adapter (not Wireless adapter).

In my case it was named: Realtek PCle GbE Family Controller

    • Right click on it, and open Properties
    • Under the Advanced tab, on the property list, select the Speed & Duplex option, and on the right under Value modify to: 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex
    • press OK.
    • Now you should have the full internet speed.
    • Cheers!

Your network cables need to be CAT5e or CAT6. Normal CAT5 can only do 100mbs. The CAT rating is printed on the cable.

    Hi william,

I'm Rodrigo and I'll help you.

You need to check if the switch, router your computer is connected to supports Gigabit connection, if positive, the problem is in the cabling, even if the cable tester shows no problem, noise and poor signal strength in the cable make it authenticates the 100mpbs connection but not the Gigabit connection.
