Windows11 - all USB connected storages are read-only

Hi,
on my laptop with Windows11 Home V:23H2 B:22631.3155 all USB drives are read only(no matter if it is flash, ssd, or normal hdd).
On other computers these drives work normally.
I tried registry (\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies -> WriteProtect:0) with no effect.
Diskpart says CURRENT READ-ONLY STATE: YES, Read-only: NO applying attributes disk clear readonly does nothing
compmgmt.msc -> Storage -> Disk Management shows these disks as read-only , whole disks, not only partitions!

Concerns only USB connected disks - sd cards inserted into integrated reader are working perfectrly... but again if I use USB cardreader, the same card is read-only

Any suggestions, please?

Don't want to make factory-state :-(

Thx!

    Hello,
    Thank you for you reply!
I went through all of your points - please find my replies for each of them:

    Thank you,
    JK

    - Check Physical Write Protection Switch:

There is no physical w/p switch, as I already mentioned - the problem concerns to all USB connected drives to this computer, on the other computers the same drives are working perfectly with no write protected issue

    - Update USB Drivers:

    Drivers and windows are updated

    - Command Prompt with Administrator Privileges:

attribute cleared, but disk remained read-only (even after restart)

    DISKPART> detail disk

    Patriot Memory USB Device

    Disk ID: CD563B4F

    Type : USB

    Status : Online

    Path : 0

    Target : 0

    LUN ID : 0

    Location Path : UNAVAILABLE

    Current Read-only State : Yes

    Read-only : No

    Boot Disk : No

    Pagefile Disk : No

    Hibernation File Disk : No

    Crashdump Disk : No

    Clustered Disk : No

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info

    Volume 4 D PATRIOT FAT32 Removable 115 GB Healthy

    - Safe mode starts Windows

problem remains in safe mode too

    - Check for Disk Errors:

chkdisk concerns only to volumes, but write-protected is the whole disk - tried anyway with this result:

    C:\Users\micro>chkdsk /f d:

The type of the file system is FAT32.

Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

    Hi Jakub-Koney,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your USB drives on Windows 11. It seems like you've already tried some common solutions, but let's try a few more troubleshooting steps:

    • Check Physical Write Protection Switch: Some USB drives and external storage devices have a physical write protection switch on the housing. Make sure this switch is not set to the write-protect position.
    • Update USB Drivers: Ensure that your USB drivers are up to date. You can do this by going to the Device Manager, expanding the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section, and updating the drivers.
    • Command Prompt with Administrator Privileges: Open Command Prompt as an administrator and try the following commands: diskpart list disk select disk X (Replace X with the disk number of your USB drive) attributes disk clear readonly This should clear the read-only attribute from the disk.
    • Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. If a problem doesn't happen in safe mode, this means that default settings and basic device drivers aren't causing the issue. Observing Windows in safe mode enables you to narrow down the source of a problem, and can help you troubleshoot problems on your PC. Start your PC in safe mode in Windows - Microsoft Support
    • Check for Disk Errors: Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run: chkdsk /f X: (Replace X with the drive letter of your USB drive) This will check for and fix any disk errors.

Disclaimer: Running chkdsk can check the file system and file system metadata of a volume for logical and physical errors. To avoid any trouble for you, do not cancel or interrupt chkdsk, and back up important data.

I hope this helps.  If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely
