Will it brick my laptop if I disable integrated graphics in device manager?

My laptop has a Nvidia gpu and I want to test the difference in battery usage between using the intel GPU and nvidia. I cannot be bothered to change every app on my laptop to run on my dedicated card and the intel will still be used in the background. Is this possible??

Hello, thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community. I am here to help and provide assistance with any questions or concerns you may have.

Disabling the integrated graphics in Device Manager may not necessarily "brick" your laptop, but it can lead to display issues, and you might lose access to your laptop's display until you re-enable it.

In most cases, the operating system uses both integrated and dedicated graphics in a dynamic way, and forcing the system to use only one may result in unexpected behavior.

You can perform your tests, it won't get bricked as you can eventually re-enable the integrated directly from Bios.

Since your BIOS lacks an option to disable the GPU, it's best to avoid trying to disable integrated graphics this way to prevent potential issues where your screen becomes unviewable upon restart.

If you do encounter such a situation where your laptop won't boot or the screen remains blank after disabling integrated graphics, you can attempt the following:

Safe Mode: Booting into Safe Mode might help bypass driver issues. By repeatedly pressing the F8 key during startup, you can access the Advanced Boot Options menu and select Safe Mode to potentially re-enable integrated graphics via Device Manager.

System Restore: Utilize a previously created system restore point to revert your laptop to a state where integrated graphics were enabled.

BIOS/UEFI: Even if your BIOS lacks a GPU disable option, you may still find other graphics-related settings. Resetting BIOS settings to default could potentially re-enable integrated graphics.

External Display: Connecting your laptop to an external monitor can help determine if the issue lies with integrated graphics or the laptop's display.

You should avoid disabling the internal graphics on a laptop.

Most laptops are designed to switch dynamically between the internal graphics and the GPU, using the GPU only for tasks like gaming or running video-intensive programs. For less demanding activities, such as web browsing, they rely on the internal graphics to save power and reduce heat.

Disabling the internal graphics forces the GPU to handle all tasks, which increases power consumption, drains your battery faster, and generates more heat. This is detrimental to both performance and the longevity of your laptop.

Additionally, disabling the internal graphics can create significant issues. For example, if the GPU fails or you install a faulty driver, you could lose access to your laptop entirely, requiring ($$) servicing to fix.

I tried it on my laptop, I disabled all my GPUs and the graphics just got really ugly, for me, nothing bad happened. But my laptop may be different from yours so I recommend asking a professional before.

My bois does not have an option for disabling a GPU so if I disabled my intel GPU and then restarted my laptop it might not turn on? If it doesn't is there a way to just re enable it like maybe using safe mode?
