The two most recent updates to windows 10 have changed my printer port and my touchpad/mouse ports.

This frustrating from the standpoint of a user, not a computer wiz.

    Hello, Alexander Nikulicz

Thanks for raising your concerns here.

I can understand that this is really troublesome for the standard point user, but this is a technical community, but if you are willing to. Let's go through some steps to address both your printer and touchpad/mouse port issues.

As for the printer port, which is not necessarily caused by a Windows update, to prevent the router from providing a different IP address to the printer (possibly a loose connection), it is recommended that you configure the router to always provide the same IP address to the printer. In daily use, if your printer uses a static IP, it will not change.

1-> For the Printer Port Issue, here you can check printer settings:

    • Open Control Panel (you can search for it in the Windows search bar).
    • Go to Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your printer and select Printer properties.
    • Click Ports. Make sure the printer listed in the Printers column has a check mark next to it.
    • Touch or click Configure Port. Make sure the item listed next to Printer Name or IP Address: is the same as the printer name or IP address listed on the setup report. (If it is different, change the printer name in the Configure Standard TCP/IP Port Monitor window.)
    • This is a common printer configuration task, but it depends on your printer model.

2-> For the Touchpad/Mouse Issue (Please download the driver based on the device' s model):

    1. Check Device Manager:
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Look for Mice and other pointing devices. Expand this section.
      • Right-click on your touchpad or mouse listing and select Update driver. You can also try Disable device and then Enable device to reset the connection.
    2. Touchpad Settings:
      • If it's the touchpad acting up, check its settings. You can usually find these in Settings > Devices > Touchpad. Ensure everything is set up as you prefer.

For some touchpads, especially those on laptops, specific drivers from the laptop manufacturer are needed for full functionality. If possible, Check the manufacturer's website for any touchpad drivers or utility software.

Feel free to let me know if anything unclear, we will do our best to provide further assistance.

    Hello, Alexander Nikulicz

It's fantastic to hear that you were able to resolve the issue with your mouse by identifying and addressing a problem with the USB controller software!

The longevity and reliability of your Toshiba laptop is truly commendable. This is a testament to the quality of certain devices, and with the right care and troubleshooting, considering not performing Windows updates if your laptop is more than 8 years old may well optimize compatibility with your current device.

If it was eight years ago, it might be 2016. Some hardware drivers for this batch of Toshiba laptops had stopped updating a few years ago, so be careful every time you check for Windows updates. Suppose you accidentally updated Windows, here's how you can roll back the update.

How to Roll Back an Update via Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) - Microsoft Community

Also, if you really don't like seeing these KB update packages for Windows, Then visit the following page to download the update hidden tool

Run this tool and follow the prompts to select the KB name that no longer needs to be updated. In your case it should be the recent KB package.

This is an update to my previous reply to the post giving suggestions on how to correct my missing mouse issue.

Since I was able to activate my touch-pad, I decided to embark on updating and installing some software for a remote device that connected via a USB port. To my surprise my computer was not able to recognize the new device. Checking Device Manager I was able to determine that the latest software download was corrupted. The portion that was corrupted was the USB controller. Once identified, I reverted to an older version and my mouse came to life.

Thank you once again for your time and suggestions. I will keep them handy for the next issue that comes along. BTW my laptop is a Toshiba that has performed admirably for almost 8 years.

Thank you for the speedy reply to my issue concerning MS updates changing the ports on my computer. I understand that the update is not supposed to change any ports as part of the update. Let me explain what occurred with the previous update to my computer. My computer is not new. It has been operating perfectly for several years and has been updated to Windows 10.

The update that I installed prior to the latest one occurred prior to the end of 2023. I installed the update and proceeded to work. Everything was functioning as normal. However, when I attempted to access my printer which worked perfectly prior to the update, i received and error message that the system could not access the printer. There were no other changes to my system at that time.

I am not a computer expert but am informed enough to be able to do several investigations and corrections. I spent several days trying to locate and correct the issue. After several days I finally broke down and took my laptop into Best Buy to speak with the "Geek Squad'. I explained all that occurred and described all of the steps that I took to locate the issue and correct it. They were impressed and told me that they would have done everything that I did. I left dejected and purchased a new laptop because I need to have access to a printer.

Thinking thru all the different 'error' messages that I saw during my efforts, I recalled one that indicated to which port my computer was connected. With nothing to loose at this point I decided to change the port. That was the issue all along. For some reason the MS update changed the port to which my printer was connected too.

I shared that information with the Geek Squad who were baffled why this happened.

I apologize for the long explanation. Thank you for the added suggestions concerning my current issue with my mouse.

    Alex
