How to reduce heavy data usage on a laptop on metered connections

Recently, I have started facing heavy data usage issues. Whenever I connect my laptop's wifi to my mobile hotspot, it consumes a lot of data even though my device is set as metered connection in my laptop. Under 5 minutes the "Data used by connected device" on my mobile read 100+ MB while on the "data usage" section in my settings of my laptop showed only 23 MB over last 24 hours.

I made sure of these things that:

  1. My mobile connection is set as metered connection.
  2. System updates were paused on my laptop
  3. System updates were disabled over metered connections.
  4. Nothing was being downloaded or uploaded from my laptop at that time.

Hello , sorry about your problems. My name is Marco and I will do my best to help you.

Ensure your network on your laptop, (You have already configured your mobile hotspot like this) is set as metered in Windows 11 to restrict background data usage and prevent automatic app updates and downloads. This setting is crucial for managing data consumption on metered connections.

    To do this:

Step 1: Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.

Step 2: On the left pane, click Network & Internet, then click the Wi-Fi option.

    Step 3: Expand your connection.

Step 4: Toggle on the Metered connection option.

Even if you are not actively downloading or uploading, there could be background processes on your laptop that are using data. This includes services like cloud synchronization, email clients checking for new messages, or other apps that communicate with servers in the background.

The intervals at which data usage is reported and updated can vary between your mobile service provider and your laptop. Your mobile might update in real-time or at specific intervals, while your laptop might have a different schedule for updating the data usage stats.

Or, there could be bugs or issues with the software on your laptop that tracks data usage, leading to inaccurate reporting.

The way data is measured and reported can differ between devices. For example, overhead data such as headers, retransmissions due to poor signal, or encryption might be counted on one device but not the other.

And If you are using a VPN on your laptop, it might cause additional data overhead due to encryption, which might not be reflected in the laptop's data usage statistics but could be counted by your mobile hotspot.

Iam having the same issue, my internet plan is showing I've used like over 600gb of data which is insane to me, I seen a different post where the person was told to go to the resource monitor I did that but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to look at or what any of it mean so I'm gonna post a screenshot, any help would be greatly appreciated.
