How do I fix intermittent black screen on Windows 10? I have tried almost all of the solutions available in the internet.

Hi. So I am experiencing intermittent black screen on my pc. To give you the details, here are the things that went down. I've had this computer for 3 years already and everything is working just fine until last week. The pc becomes unresponsive right after the screen suddenly goes black.

Here are the things I did in order:
1. The first thing I did was check the event viewer for system errors, and the errors I have seen were DCOM errors and Error 10013(which is a socket error), so I searched for possible solutions and none of them worked. I cant provide any screenshots from back then as I have already reinstalled Windows 10.

2. After trying to troubleshoot the DCOM errors, I tried using the windows update since I thought it must have something to do with the security, but things got worse after the update to the point that I cant even use my computer anymore because the screen turns black and becomes unresponsive.
3. Since the windows update made things worse, I tried formatting the pc and installing Windows 10 Pro.

-I deleted all the partitions on the disk where I installed the OS

-Updated the drivers using Driver Booster

-Installed the necessary apps

Things were working fine back then, I played the games I used to play and did my tasks at work. But then the same error occurred out of nowhere again.
4. So after the black screen of death came back, I once again tried reinstalling Windows 10 Pro, but this time I didnt use the Driver Booster and just left the update to Windows Update. But since my GPU is AMD, I installed the AMD driver so I could easily track which might be causing the error. So this time the error occurred, so I thought it might be the graphics driver. So I uninstalled the graphics driver while in safemode and installed the AMD.

5. After that, everything was fine. I used the PC 8 hours straight without any problems. But then, the error came back, so I checked the Device Manager for other driver errors, I saw the pci simple communications controller is not updated, so I tried fixing it again and installed Intel ME. It was successful, but a few hours earlier the error came back.

I have tried every solution I could find in the internet already. But the problem doesnt seem to go away. I even tried SFC /scannow and DISM both scans showed no errors at all. I am pretty sure that it's not the hardware as well because temperatures are normal and things run smoothly even though I run the games and apps that I usually use. Also, if the problem is coming from the hardware, I think I'd get the error or my system would fail while running the games and apps, right?

The timeline of which these happened is: Saturday Jan 27, 2024 and until today Wednesday Jan 31 2024Can anyone please help me or provide some insights? I am at my wits end.I am running my pc using the following hardwareIntel i3 3220 3.30 gHz8gb RAMAMD Rx560Note. No error occurred while I making this post, from what I notice, the black screen error occurs usually when the pc is on idle for a while or when I am watching and not doing anything else. Thank you in advance

    Hello ,

My suggestion is to refrain from using the AMD dedicated graphics card initially*. Make sure everything else is functioning properly without it (Run it for a day after booting up to see if there are any black screen errors).*

If the issues only arise when using the AMD graphics card*,* it suggests that the problem isn't with the system or other hardware components.

At this point, I recommend Contact to the graphics card manufacturer or seeking alternative graphics card repair services*.*

For this issue. At the moment, I can only assist you in pinpointing the issue*. (For instance, If your Windows won't start, I may have a good solution for you. If your* graphics card is malfunctioning, I cannot provide a repair solution).

Furthermore, you don't need to worry about me leaving; I will keep monitoring this thread continuously.

    Best regards.

Hi there. Thanks again for responding.

I managed to fix the problem simply by removing my CMOS/BIOS battery(which resets the entire BIOS) I also ran a ONE HOUR stress test on my video card with the latest graphics driver available for AMD afterwards and no issue occurred, that was last night and it has been approximately 22hours ago. I was able to use my computer perfectly without any issues in the past 9 hours today, but the error seems to have come back. It occurred an hour ago. I have tried restoring the BIOS settings to it's default earlier and after doing so, the computer starts but after the OS loaded, it was all black screen and seems to have freezed(which is the same issue I encounter as well) so I decided to remove the CMOS/BIOS batter again, and everything seems to be working fine again. Can you provide some insights about this? I am starting to think that the problem lies in the BIOS since removing and placing the CMOS/BIOS battery back seems to fix the problem.

    Hello ,

For some older hardware*,* newer drivers may not necessarily be the best option*.*

    Best regards.

Hi. Thanks again for responding and sorry for my late response.

I was observing my computer the entire day. The black screen error is still happening. I tried uninstalling the driver and using the old version of AMD driver, but it's still happening. I also tried applying new thermal paste on the GPU and CPU. The event viewer isn't showing any possible issues right after the PC goes black screen. Only the DCOM warnings were there and the DCOM errors were not present right after the crash. The GPU temperature is also normal.

I just rolled back my display driver and I'll let my PC run and do some work and see if the black screen error still occurs. If so, I'll try to install an older driver version for AMD. If you have any tips or insights to share from this response of mine, I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you so much

Hi. Thank you so much for responding. I have tried using the basic intel graphics adapter and it seems to work. The system is running fine at the moment as I have uninstalled the latest AMD graphics driver for my GPU and installed the previous version. The latest update was released Jan23 2024 which is around the date the problem started. I installed the previous version which was released Nov 2023. The system is also freshly installed Windows 7 Professional and then upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. I also opted on installing the AMD Software and so far things are fine.

As for the clean boot, I'll give it a try and let you know if the problem persists after the steps I have made. Again, thank you for responding

    Hello ,

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

Your computer experiences a black screen error when it's idle.

For this issue, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

    1. You may Perform a clean boot*, this is a troubleshooting step. In this mode, we can further confirmed whether it is caused by system problems or third-party software or personalized Settings. So please be patient.* Disclaimer: A “clean boot”(Click here to learn more) starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background program is interfering with the normal operation of Windows and to isolate the cause of a problem. These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get you back on track.
    2. Try removing the AMD discrete graphics card and only use the Intel integrated graphics card to see if the issue persists. This step can help eliminate whether the issue is caused by the AMD discrete graphics card*.*

If there are further results, please feel free to reply.
