Hi Graeme Stevens,
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
The problem with the new clean install is that it will erase the data on the disk, which means that the user of the device will eventually need to reinstall the software and configure the appropriate software runtime environment.
Accordingly, the benefit of a clean install is that a completely new Windows system will be built from scratch on the disk.
- This process completely rebuilds all Windows components, rebuilds account profiles, and minimizes interference from other software or services.
- In some cases, reinstalling a different version of Windows helps to analyze whether the problem is related to a specific version of Windows.
- After reinstalling Windows, your device will be in a relatively basic state before retrieving Windows Update. Retrieving and installing Windows Update on this basis can further narrow down the scope of analyzing the problem.
- In some scenarios, it can be used to analyze whether the problem is related to the hardware itself.
If the device still has an update history, you can restore the device to a relatively early state for further observation.
If you eventually decide to perform a reinstallation of Windows, you can find information about it in this thread.

- Custom or clean install At this point, we have exhausted all troubleshooting and I recommend that we try to perform a clean install to get your computer back into a working condition. Please ensure that you backup any important data, including Documents, Pictures, Videos, and more. After that, you can find instructions on how to install Windows 10/11 in the following article by MVP Andre: How to: Perform a Custom Installation of Windows 11 and Windows 10 - Microsoft Community
If you plan to test some previous versions of Windows, discussion messages from community members in this thread mentioned other channels to obtain some of the previous versions of Windows.
