HP Spectre x360 Touchpad problem. oem12.inf

I have an HP Spectre x360 13.5 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-ef0000 (3Y837AV). And for the past few months I've been having constant problems with the touchpad. The touchpad either stops responding, or the cursor moves with a terrible delay.

To rule out a problem with Windows, the best option will be to perform an in-place repair with the Windows 11 ISO, if this does not resolve the problem, then it would be best to get your laptop serviced under warranty if it is only 6 months old.

Please follow the steps, this is then just an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

Click this link:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

to download the Windows 11 ISO

When the ISO file completes downloading

Disconnect from the Internet

Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the upgrade option.

I never had the issue again for the past months. Two things happened since then that may have influenced it:

    • a BIOS update (I believe it was F.24), and..
    • I opened the back of the laptop, removed the battery, and reinserted the trackpad cable both in the trackpad and the motherboard, making sure to insert it well and press down the connector well.

For the 2nd point, you can find some videos on YouTube about spectre x360 touchpad replacement. You follow basically the same steps, except that you don't actually replace it but just reinsert its connection cable on both ends. Search on YouTube for "Remove and Replace the Touchpad Board | HP Spectre x360 13 | HP", it's a video from HP itself. It's quite easy to do, you just need some small screwdrivers. Not sure if it breaks any warranties though, so if you care about that, you may want to double check that. I didn't have to break through any stickers or anything, so presumably it's not a problem.

I'm not sure which of the two steps actually did the trick, but since the BIOS update only happened a bit later, and I already didn't have issues, I think the trackpad cable was probably the issue. Then again, since it wasn't a super consistent problem to begin with, I'll never be 100% sure. What I do know is that I haven't had this issue again since then.

    I hope this helps someone!

    Kind regards,

    Niek

    Hi Niek,

Just wanted to say thanks so much for the hardware tip! I had noticed that if I pressed on the touchpad, it would start to work again sometimes, so it being a cable connection problem made a lot of sense.

After you suggested it, I took apart my laptop, reattached all of the connectors, and added new computer tape; it hasn't given me any problems since (*Fingers Crossed*). It's silly that HP didn't design the cables to stay in place better, but I will take that problem over having to replace a bunch of parts!

    Casey

Hi Illya 39 where you able to solve it? I'm having the same problem with exactly the same laptop. I reinstalled windows, contacted HP support, but nobady can help. It seems a software issue and is hard to replicate, it happens randomly but is very annoying. I'm quite desperate at this point

I have the exact same issue: sometimes the touchpad is extremely laggy or fails to respond at all. Other times, it works fine. HP Spectre x360 bought new in 2023. I updated the touchpad driver, which didn't help. One time, when the issue was happening, I rebooted into hardware diagnostics by pressing F2 repeatedly on boot, so I could try the touchpad component test, but even in this "BIOS mode" (not familiar with the terminology here, but it's a very basic, low-resolution UI, not Windows), the touchpad didn't respond. So I'm now less sure it's a software issue, unless this BIOS mode uses the same driver? Of course it still uses some kind of driver even in this mode, but it must be something quite low level for the issue to show up even there. If someone has an answer, I'd be very interested!

    Thank you.
