I have a new laptop (Windows 11). External DVD drive connected. Everytime I try to play a DVD it locks up after a few seconds or minutes. I have downloaded the Microsoft DVD Player and updated it. I have tried 2 other DVD player apps. The same things happens on every App. The same apps work great on my old laptop (Windows 8) but Windows 11 won't work no matter what I try. I have done all the updates and added all the Codecs. I notice that lots of people are complaining about this issue but have yet to find a answer.

I had same problem with a HP USB external drive DVD player/recorder. I gave up after 4 hours of "intense fellowship" with it. It works fine on my Win 10 laptop. There is an issue with these, and MS is not supportive of this problem. The Win 11 has software issues, and they are refusing to handle this like gentlemen.

I plan on installing Win 10 on this new laptop and to H LL with Win 11.

    Good luck

    Joe

To reinstall the driver, follow these steps:

Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.

Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, then press Enter.

In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then select Uninstall.

When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, select OK.

    Restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed.

It's now 38 people on this very page...who took action to click into the community of the DVD-deprived.

There is only the SSD under Device Manager on my wife's laptop that used to have Windows 10 but updated to 11.

The drive I bought last year works on my laptop that has Windows 10 but can't update to 11 because the processor isn't supported. (Built in protection from Windows 11 DVD blindness?)

What's different? Seems like 11 is the problem.

I tried shopping online for another external USB DVD drive that boasts of Windows 11 compatibility. Some just say Windows and Mac in their specs but that's suspiciously vague. The others only list Windows 10 as the latest Windows version.

I wonder how many people with this problem are using USB A cables (out of necessity).

I wonder if there is a problem in Windows 11 assuming everybody uses USB C now, rather than nobody needs an external optical drive.

I wonder if other data devices work on USB A port with W11. I no longer have a USB floppy drive but I'll try passing data to/from a phone & external sound card device as an experiment & see if Device Manager recognizes them.

No third party security. Clearing all the caches doesn't help, rebooting doesn't help. There are many threads about the same issue here on MS site but they all end with " just install a new dvd player".
