Ran the command "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew" but renew will not work and says media is disconnected. How do I fix this?

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 laptop with Windows 11 and is all up to date. I was running commands in Powershell 7 (ran as admin) for a class assignment and one was to run ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew, however, renew did not work and is saying my media is disconnected. Troubleshooting I have already done is:

  • Updating Windows and laptop
  • Reset the router
  • Ran Network Adapter troubleshooter and it came back with no issues
  • Reset Winsock catalog commands in Command Prompt (ran as admin) and restarting device
  • Restarting device
  • Disabling and enabling network adapters through command in Powershell 7 (ran as admin)
  • ipconfig /flushdns

This is what it looks like in Powershell 7 (screenshot would not upload):

PS C:\Windows\System32> ipconfig /renew

The result of ipconfig shows that the wireless network card receives a correct IP address.

I still see VPN and VirtualBox virtual adapters present in the system. But is your connection working now or are you still having problems?

Keep the VPN disabled, open CMD and type ipconfig /all and then press enter. Copy everything and post the result.

I tried connecting to my home network and school network at separate times and got the same output from the command. I can connect to my home wi-fi and school wi-fi though. I have a VPN I use occasionally but it has been disconnected the whole time I have been having this issue.

Is the network you are connecting to your home network or is it the school network? If you are using a VPN, disable it and try connecting again
