PC wakes up from sleep instead of hibernating

Hello Ms Community,

I have an interesting problem I need your help with.

As in the title, my PC is set up to turn screen off after 15 min, go to sleep after 30 min and finally hibernate after 120 min of inactivity. It does the first 2 things without a hitch, but has problems with hibernating; Rather than going into deep sleep, it powers up again and stays active.

After the failure, if i leave it be, sometimes it goes back to sleep and later succesfully hibernates, or it does not go to sleep at all and just stays active (screen does turn off though).

I've scoured the forums for answers and I could not find any, however I’ve learned a few things to help me pinpoint the issue. Sadly I am no closer to resolving it by myself, so I kindly ask for your help.

What I did was, I made sure that:

  • There are no active wake alarms (confirmed with powercfg)
  • LAN is set to not wake the PC
  • Updates etc are not to run when in low power mode
  • Power plan is set not to allow any wakes to occur

I’ve ran powercfg /lastwake and it always comes back with the same info:

C:\Windows\System32>powercfg /lastwake

Wake History Count - 1

Wake History [0]

  Wake Source Count - 1

  Wake Source [0]

    Type: Device

    Instance Path: ACPI\ACPI000E\2&daba3ff&0

    Friendly Name:

    Description: ACPI Wake Alarm

    Manufacturer: (Standard system devices)

However using /waketimers shows:

C:\Windows\System32>powercfg /waketimers

There are no active wake timers in the system.

I also did sleep study and I see the moment it wakes up, but can’t really read any more info from it since the exit reason is either “--------------” or “Unknown”

That’s as far as I got and I am not sure what else to try, I am pretty sure neither my keyboard or mouse wakes it up since no one is touching them and they are both on a even surface.

I can provide a copy of the sleep study report if needed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Paw

I have had this problem for well over a year and have tried to fix this numerous times with no avail.

    Reset Drivers...

    Reset BIOS...

Disabled all devices from being able to wake pc (power management in device manager)...

    etc...

    None work.

If anyone has a genuine fix that'd be amazing.

Hi, did you have HP Smart or any driver related to HP printer installed on your computer? If so, try following:

    Open the Task Scheduler
Go to (on the left box) Task Scheduler Library > HP > HP Print Scan Doctor
On the right, under Actions > Selected Item, click Properties
    Go to the Conditions tab
Under Power, uncheck Wake the computer to run this task

Please let me know if this help

I have the same problem as well.

Extending the hiberfile to 100% and disabling "fast startup" did not resolve the issue.

I am using a Gigabyte MB and running Windows 11.

The fact we have different brand motherboards helps with trouble shooting, so thank you for supplying that information.

I have much to my dismay completely capitulated and disabled automatic hibernate.

I have confirmed that the issue is caused by Windows failing to hibernate during the sleep phase.

The ACPI Wake Alarm event happens at exactly the time I have set for Windows to hibernate. If it is set to 6 hours, it happens every 6 hours. For some reason, the computer will not sleep but remains awake for this 6 hour cycle.

Now that I exclusively use automatic sleep, my computer does not wake up anymore. I am manually hibernating if I know I will be gone for an extended period of time.

Perhaps a future Windows update will remedy this.

I run a HP printer and have the HP smart app, went thru these steps and it successfully fixed my random wake alarm trigger. This morning, PC was still asleep. First time in a long time! Hope this continues to be what was causing that wake alarm trigger!

    Big thank you!

    Hey James,

Did you ever resolve this issue? It has been an unbelievable PITA since I built my new computer.

One of the most mind boggling issues is why does the computer not simply go back to sleep/hibernate after it wakes itself up?

I have put in over a dozen hours of research trying to fix this to no avail...

    Thanks
