How to update Windows 10 from version 1703 to 22H2 using Microsoft Update Catalog

Hello Microsoft Community,

I was wondering if I could update Windows version 1703 (OS Build 15063.502) to the latest version of Windows 10, using the Microsoft Update Catalog. The reason why I ask this is because I am trying to update a HP Notebook from 2017 that has some problems (for example, the installation boots to the built-in Admin account and I can't update from 1703 using the Windows 10 update assistant because it claims I'm running on Audit mode). I'd appreciate if anyone could tell me the steps to update only using the Microsoft Update Catalog, what Audit mode is, and in addition, what an OEM key is.

Help is appreciated,

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

An OEM licence is a pre-installed Windows licence stored on your motherboard.

Because your version of Windows is 7 years out of date, all normal methods to update Windows will fail and there is not way to update major versions from the Microsoft Catalog, there are only KB monthly and security updates available there not feature updates.

You can try using the Windows 10 ISO to perform an in-place upgrade using the steps below, but if that also fails, then you would need to backup your personal files, create a bootable USB and use that to clean install Windows 10.

Please follow the steps, this is then not like re-installing Windows, it is just like an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

    Click this link:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), then choose ISO, not USB

When the ISO file completes downloading

    Disconnect from the Internet

Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the Install option.

I was looking up this same question earlier after finding out my HP recovery media was also 1703. I was pleasantly surprised to see it auto identified "feature update to Windows 10, version 22H2" via the standard Windows Update tool built into settings.

I disagree that "all normal methods to update Windows will fail." It applied the update in a single reboot, after it came via Windows Update built-in to Windows 10 1703 automatically. This is outlined on the MS page also.
