Videos lag and stutter in full screen on Windows 11 video player apps.

No matter the resolution, framerate, video file type or the video player used, the video always plays fine for about 10 seconds and then stutters, lags and skips frames when the video is played in full screen. I have updated both the system bios to latest firmware and updated the display drivers, still the problem persists. I have played the video with nothing else running in the background but nothing changes and I have factory reset and repaired, terminated and fully reinstalled the apps from scratch several times, and yet still nothing fixes it. IMPORTANT NOTE: This howvever is not an issue playing videos from the web like youtube or twitch full screen, only an issue playing local files on windows apps like the films & tv app, photos app and the windows 11 media player app. I have all the video extensions downloaded also. Can I please have some help with this???

    Solution:

    1.) Open Microsoft Edge Browser
2.) Select the ... button in the upper right hand corner, and then select the "Settings" button with the gear iconhttps://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/605ed325-8954-4b4c-964c-a214faf26fa6?platform=QnA"result--">Result:

All open web browsers on separate monitors are now able to play video at the same time. With Use Hardware Acceleration enabled it would seem that video performance crawls to a halt when more than two or three videos are playing at the same time. This also happens when playing a video game on one monitor, and watching a tutorial video on another.

Experiencing the same issue on a clean install of Windows 11. I have all up-to-date drivers installed from my motherboard and video card manufacturers. This did not happen using the same hardware when running Windows 10.

    Repro Steps:
1.) Open three edge web browsers to Youtube
2.) Start playing YouTube videos on full-screen mode at 720p - 1080p resolution
    3.) Maximize each screen
4.) Upon opening, the third screen and setting it to maximize, all three videos freeze

5.) Minimizing the third screen or closing it out will allow the other two videos to play at full screen uninterrupted

Similar slow-down and pause behaviors were experienced when copy editing multiple copies of Microsoft Word for more than a couple of hours. Opening multiple copies of Word and switching between open documents with large copy-and-paste segments seems to slow the PC down as the workday progresses. This all started happening after doing a fresh install of WIndows 11 Pro 64bit.

    Hardware:

    • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core 3.59 GHz (12 threads)
    • RAM: 32GB
    • Motherboard: ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING
    • Video Card: Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT 6128 MB GDDR6 VRAM 1750 MHz
    • Power Mode: Performance

    Hi JAMESOKOLIE14,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I understand that you're experiencing issues with videos lagging and stuttering in full-screen mode on certain Windows 11 video player apps when playing local files. Since the issue seems to be isolated to specific apps and not affecting online streaming services, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Perform a clean boot to ensure no third-party applications or services are conflicting with the video player apps. This can help identify if the issue is caused by some software interference. How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

Check video file properties - Corrupt, poorly encoded or very high resolution/bitrate videos can be hard for players to handle and cause lagging. Try lower resolution files as a test. Re-encode or re-export the file if needed.

Since the problem is specific to certain Windows apps, try using alternative video players to see if the issue persists. If these third-party players work fine, it might be a problem with the Windows 11 media apps themselves.

Microsoft attaches great importance to user experience, you can submit your issue through the Feedback Hub, and the development team will regularly review submissions for ideas or fixes.

Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support

Please share the feedback link here after submitting as it will allow others on the forum to vote for your submission, including me. More votes will lead to more visibility and higher priority to the development team.

I hope this helps.  If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely

Hahn - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

Hmm, the only time I had a similar issue involving a full-screen problem was youtube in a browser. I realize you've already stated this is not your issue but I will share with you what fixed my issue anyhow in case it somehow helps you. I am assuming you have already tried setting your pc on the "high performance" power plan? After that, you can try adjusting your pc for best performance to see if it helps. To do it go into your pc settings and type "performance". Then click on "adjust the appearance and performance of windows". Select the "adjust for best performance" option. Might want to also tick the "smooth edges of screen fonts" as you will most likely get fuzzy fonts if you don't. These 2 things were what fixed my problem. But read on for additional things that are very logical to try. Going by what you've written so I will omit things you've already said you tried. If you didn't mention it, I will assume you haven't tried it.

If after doing the above the video playback issue persists, you can also try disabling your antivirus (especially if you're using something other than the default Windows Security that comes pre-installed with windows 11) to see if that helps.

Next would be to try disabling some startup apps from your task manager. Go into task manager then "startup apps" and take a look at what's enabled. Try disabling everything EXCEPT anything with the word "service64". You should also NOT mess with anything pertaining to the names of your audio and video drivers. If unsure, google the name to find out what it is and what it does. And while you're in your task manager take a look to see if there's something unusual eating up your memory and/or CPU and try to figure out what, why and how to stop it.

    Extra troubleshooting (not likely necessary):

If all else fails you can try (just for curiosity and giggles) to see if using a codec pack like K-Lite causes any different reaction, though I highly doubt it.

Good luck and I sincerely do hope you get your issue fixed.
