Headset mic not detected on USB ports, working on USB-c Hub

Hi, I have a few Microsoft LifeChat 3000 headsets.

One day the one I was using stopped working in Chrome, but kept working fine in Teams. The following day Windows just didn't recognize that there was a microphone present in any of the headsets. They work perfectly in any other computer. Additionally, I just tried a USB-C hub and the microphone is picked up perfectly.

I already followed all the steps everywhere, reinstalled drivers and all of that, with no avail.

Is this a hardware issue to do with the USB ports?

Just had this with a client that I offer IT support for.

Just had a similar issue with this client that I offer IT support for.
It was weird 'cause their mic on their headset would work on other devices, but not on his. Making this a local problem with the laptop itself.

Used the usbc port with a usb hub, and low and behold the Microphone was now working. Which kinda pointed me to the internal usb controller.
So I opened up Device Manager as admin(devmgmt.msc in the search bar, right click and run as administrator) and uninstalled the usb controller. For me it was named: "Intel(R) USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.20 (Microsoft) - but to be on the safe side, uninstall everything under "Universal Serial Bus controllers"

Restart machine and the drivers will automatically get reinstalled, and hopefully with that your microphone on your headseat will start working as well.

    I have the same problem.

My issue after 3 years of using logitech G435, the port i typically used stopped recognizing the headset(last month in jan 2024) as a microphone input via Teams, as well as in the audio settings . I tried uninstalling drivers, however that was unsuccessful. I put it into my other USB A port and it worked for the first attempt, but second time I inserted into the port, the microphone stopped being detected. I then used a USB 2.0 type A unpowered hub in the same ports and the microphone appears and headset works properly. I am hesitant to say it is at the hardware fault level as the same port that could not power the device directly is now powering a hub and the device which is only a 40mA draw. The PC port successfully powers USB 2.0 devices that draw 450mA of current continuously. Also goldfingers of the lightspeed USB adapter show minimal wear and tear and no damage. If there was a connection issue, audio would not work as well as they are both the same data stream. Directly in the ports of the computer and it only appears as an output device. Through an unpowered hub and it appears as both output and input. My company recently made many changes to group policy settings and locked things down a bit more. I suspect it has something to do with that however I haven't tried on another work computer yet. I only know that my personal computers, everything works fine and through the cheap hub in my work computer everything works fine. it's annoying but not the end of the world.

    Hello, Sixten_Tore

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

The description of the problem and the test steps you provided are very clear. According to your tests, the microphone is not recognised by the computer when plugged directly into a USB port, while it works fine when connected through a USB hub. In addition, you have tried reinstalling the drivers at the system level, but the problem is still not resolved.

This suggests that the problem is probably not at the software level, but at the hardware level. Specifically, there may be some physical fault with your USB port that prevents the device from being recognised when connected directly. However, after expanding the port through a USB hub, the hub provides additional power and signal transmission functions, temporarily covering the fault of the port, so that the device can be recognised and used.

It is recommended that you visit an official repair shop to check if there is a hardware problem with the USB port, it is likely that it is indeed caused by your hardware problem, I wish you all the best!
