File Types

Hi Community.  Dohn here again.

All of my songs are MP3 files, except one.  I have one M4A file, “Time Passages” by Al Stewart.  Both file types play fine with Windows Media Player.

Question?  What is the difference between MP3 and M4A files?

Thanks Community.

    From ChatGPT:

MP3 and M4A are both digital audio file formats, but they have some differences in terms of compression methods and compatibility.

    1. Compression Method:
      • MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III): MP3 files use a lossy compression algorithm to reduce the file size while preserving audio quality. This compression method discards some audio data that is considered less essential to human hearing.
      • M4A (MPEG-4 Part 14): M4A files can use various audio codecs, including AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), and others. AAC, the most common codec used in M4A files, generally provides better sound quality than MP3 at the same bit rate and often results in smaller file sizes. ALAC, on the other hand, is a lossless compression format, meaning it retains the original audio quality without loss of data.
    2. Compatibility:
      • MP3: MP3 is one of the most widely supported audio formats and is compatible with almost all devices, software, and platforms, including computers, smartphones, tablets, portable media players, and car stereos.
      • M4A: M4A files are commonly associated with Apple products and services, as they are the default audio format used by iTunes and Apple Music. While M4A files can be played on many devices and media players, they may not be as universally compatible as MP3 files.
    3. Metadata:
      • Both MP3 and M4A files support metadata such as artist, album, track title, and album art. However, M4A files typically have better support for advanced metadata features, such as chapter markers and lyrics, especially when using the AAC codec.

In summary, MP3 and M4A are both popular audio file formats, but MP3 is more universally compatible and has been around longer, while M4A often offers better sound quality at similar file sizes, especially when using the AAC codec. M4A files are more commonly associated with Apple products and services.

    Hello, this is Emily.

M4A's full name is MPEG 4 Audio, it uses different audio codec compared to MP3's. These are usually more advanced codecs to offer better sound quality than MP3. It can also compress the file better than MP3 does, hence the same file can be smaller in size but better in quality.
