Why can my computer no longer find the external ARCAM irDAC-II (digital to analog convertor) linking my computer sound system to my hi fi?

My computer originally had a CPU and motherboard which was not compatible with W11. I have just changed them to compatible items. My sound system has run for several years without problems. It also worked with the new motherboard. Soon after the hardware change I reactivated my license (W11 Pro) and as soon as I had finished that my system was grabbed by W11 update. Once I had found my way out of that I discovered that W11 could no longer find the irDAC-II as a sound device. I checked the connections. All OK. I reinstalled the driver - and it all worked properly. Later I shut down the computer (I normally put it to sleep but since W11 I have not been able to wake it up again, but that's a different problem) thinking I had solved the problem but when I later restarted it the irDAC-II had vanished once again. I have once again checked (and swapped around) connections, I have reinstalled the driver, but nothing I have done has been able to make my system aware of the device. What should I try next?

I've tried all that. No unknown devices. The only sound driver on the MSI website is for the Realtek Audio, which doesn't enter the picture. The Bios is up to date except for yesterday's release.

But Good News and Humble Apologies. The solution to the problem turned out to be simple. The driver installation instructions included 'disconnect and then connect' the DAC from the computer after the installation of the driver. I've been religiously doing that, until just now. Instead I powered off the DAC and then turned it back on again. Now everything works.

Nevertheless I have learned something new about Windows and I would like to thank you for that.

If there are any unknown devices in your Device Manager then Windows isn't finding the drivers.

I would download sound drivers from the motherboard's manufacturer website. Keep installing drivers until there are no more unknown devices.

While you're at the manufacturer website you should also check to see what the latest BIOS version is and compare it to yours. If there is a newer BIOS version then update. You can see your BIOS version in the System Information app.

You could also check to see if the playback device has been disabled for some reason. Type "Change System Sounds" and go to the "Playback" tab. Right click and enable "Show Disabled Devices". If your device shows up then right click it and enable it.
