I accidentally bricked my laptop.

I accidentally bricked my laptop. It was running slow and taking forever to boot. I went through msconfig several times and got fed-up and unchecked all of the startup services. Now all I get is a black screen. I restarted it to the command prompt an was able to start msconfig but it gave me a notice that I was not authorized and stopped right there. I have tried using a restore point but that didn't help, it just loops at that point. BTW, I tried booting in safe mode but no luck. Any ideas of how to fix this? Windows 10 Home.

In this case, the only option is to use another computer to create a bootable USB with the Windows installation and perform a custom installation of Windows.

As long as you do not format the C: drive in the Setup, you will not lose your data, but they will be moved to another location. After the installation, you can find a folder Windows.old in the root directory of C: drive. All your files are saved there.

Note: This procedure only will keep the personal files, all software and apps need to be reinstalled.

1-Create a USB device with an installation image.

You can create using the media creation tool, download it on this link.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

2-Enter on BIOS/UEFI and change to boot from the USB device.

    3-Click "Install Now".

4- Type your product key or skip it. Usually, your computer will be activated automatically when it's connected to a network if you install the same version of Windows as before.

5- Select the installation type "Custom".

6- Select the C: drive and click Next to proceed. Then, wait patiently until the installation is complete 100%.

Hi, Dion. I'm Robinson, and I’m happy to help you today.

You cannot start the msconfig from the Windows Recovery Environment, you need to start it from the login screen to be able to start the services again.

Step 1: Replace the "Utilman" with the "CMD"

1-Restart your computer while holding the "Shift” button

2-The Advanced Startup menu will open on the boot.

    3-Go to Troubleshoot.

4-Now, go to Advanced Options >Command prompt

5-Type these commands and press Enter after each one:

    move C:\windows\system32\utilman.exe C:\

    copy C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe C:\windows\system32\utilman.exe

6-Type this command and press Enter to reboot your PC:

    wpeutil reboot

Step 2: Open the Command Prompt and restore the msconfig settings

1-Once you are on the login screen, click on the Accessibility button (human icon) in the lower right corner and the Command Prompt will be opened.

2-Type this command and press Enter:

    msconfig.exe

3-Click on the "Service" tab and click on the "Enable all" button

4-Click on the Apply and OK button to save the change

5-Close the Command Prompt and reboot your PC

6-Now you should be able to sign in on Windows normally

    Step 3:Restore the Utilman

1-Click on Start, search for Command Prompt

2-Right-click on that and select "Run as Administrator"

3-Paste this command and press Enter:

    move C:\utilman.exe C:\windows\system32\utilman.exe /Y

4-When finished, close the Command Prompt

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be glad to assist you further.

Hmm, this presents another problem. I don't have a login screen. I have my boot set to no gui boot and sos and I don't have a password. I did that a long time ago so it would just boot up and I can start using it without having to go through the login process. When it starts to boot now, all I see is the windows picture in the middle of the screen and it goes black after that. I tried the shift thing but it just does the same thing.

When I get to the point of running msconfig, I get this message. How do I get administrator rights while in command mode?
