Japanese IME - How to change the keyboard layout so that I can type in romaji to get the corresponding kana?

Hi,

I recently gor a new laptop running under Windows 11 and am struggling with setting up the Japanese keyboard.

When using my former laptop and typing "kana" characters with a similar AZERTY keyboard, I would type "B+U" to get the ぶ character, "N+E" to get ね etc.

However, right now it seems that each key is bound to a whole syllable, (i.e. when I type "B+U" I get こな and "N+E" is みい.) I assume this might match an actual Japanese keyboard or something and I've been looking for the option to change this input style in the settings but am not tech-savvy and haven't found it yet.

I hope my explanations were clear enough to understand, and I thank you for your time,

Mel

Hello, It is I Super Mel

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Hello, thank you for your feedback, as my native language is not Japanese either, but I still did some research and testing for you, you can open the language logo in the bottom right corner of your computer and find the option marked below if it is open you can turn it off and try it, it may work.

Thank you for your time and effort in resolving this issue.

    Best regards

    Hi Bobhe,

While I didn't find this option as seen in your picture, it did help me find it in the input settings menu I had previously been meddling with by translating the option you showed me.

I'll admit it is an actually very noticeable on/off button, but I didn't make the link between its name and its function.

If anyone ever needs to know, in French the full path to it would be :

"Heure et langue" > "Langue et région" > "Japonais" > "Options linguistiques" > Claviers - "Éditeur de méthode d'entrée Microsoft" > "Options de clavier" > "Général" > "Utiliser l'entrée Kana pour le clavier manuel" (Off/Désactivé = Writing B+U in romaji gives you ぶ.)

Thank you very much for your quick and helpful answer, I appreciate it!

    Mel
