My Folders Do Not Act Normally. Each folder in a folder opens independently.

I have provisioned windows 98 Second Edition, Windows XP Pro, Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 10 Pro and lastly, Windows 11 Pro.

I never accidentally changed an option that changed how folders open, multiply, and close.

Using any drive or internal storage SSD, or flash drive or raid box storage unit, when I open a folder inside of a folder, the opened folder cannot be left clicked to go back to the originating folder. Every folder I open becomes a stand-alone folder. Left Click to go back is NOT available. The arrows are shaded.

The stand-alone folder Up Clicks back to the main Folder and file column. When it gets to the drive I started from, I get main Folder presentation of Folders and files in a column. The taskbar icon changes back to a drive icon including its alphabet letter. Every time I open a folder inside a folder the original folder stays in place i.e., stands alone on the task bar. I have opened 4 levels of folders in a folder instead of one folder that was opened 4 times and can left click back to any one of 4 levels I opened it up to.

The UP arrow is in Black, and I click that but that takes me to the original Column of folders and files. The original folder and files has the drive icon letter. (Detail View)

This takes up taskbar space and I have 5 drive E icons displaying and eight opened with E\ on the name. This is phycho! It is driving me nuts. Who wanted this?

When I was provisioning this thing, MS used words they pulled out of I don’t know where. So, I was left trying to guess what an option was for. Well, I really guessed this one wrong.

Anyone know what option I need to change and where it is?

BTW, I did this in a very short span of time. The examples are not perfect but they do make it clear what is happening to my PC. Folders are running Amuck!

Hello, welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Based on your feedback, you are experiencing the issue where computer folders are opening independently.

You can try the following method:

Click on File Explorer

Then click on the "..." at the top > Options

Then in the General tab > Browse folders, select "Open each folder in the same window"

Then check if your issue still exists.

Hope the above information is helpful to you.

Hi Kirito. WOW! That took me 7 minutes to fix. It is “Normal” now. 4 minutes of the 7 minutes I used looking for quotation marks. I am used to reading instructions that just say Look for the … in the right top corner.

That was from Firefox. They need to give those instructions often. I read those instructions often. But they are not quitters. They keep trying, bless their hearts. They are the only web browser that I know of that saves webpages on your desktop that displays all the colors of that webpage icon. I’m not sure what terms to use to describe that.

But thank you, thank you, thank you. You are Great! You understood what I was asking. Your advice allowed me to fix my folder problems lick. That was so annoying, and it was driving me cuckoo.

One last question that came up yesterday. A friend of mine who runs Windows 10 Home, “accidentally” deleted the folder with his name on it from his desktop. I have googled “Where is ‘File Explorer’ located in Windows 10 Home” and I could not get a definite answer from the internet. I showed him that he could open “This PC” icon and find the folders that were in the folder with his name on it. Could you please enlighten me.

Is the original “Fire Explorer” folder somewhere in the OS folders. Like the Windows folder or the system folder that I could create a short cut on his desktop from? As long as I am asking about Windows 10 Home, could you please include Windows 11 Pro in your answer. That would be for me. My PC builder and advisor told me to always use the Pro version of any Windows OS. So, starting with XP Pro, I have only installed Pro versions on my PCs.

I was over at my friend’s house helping him with his VPN. He had been out of town for awhile and missed the expiration deadline on his VPN. I looked and looked for the VPN Icon and then looked and looked for the program, but it was not there. I asked him if he uninstalled but he told me he would not know how to do that. He told me that he had paid the renewal fee, and he showed his receipt, but he could not get it to work. The VPN program was nowhere to be found. So, I went to the VPN website and found the MS Windows program and downloaded it. It downloaded into the download folder, and it said Android on the file name.

I went back to the VPN website and went back to the download button and that took me to a page that said Windows, but the downloaded file said Android again.

So, I scrolled down on his download folder and found the original VPN program that was originally installed on his PC in 2022. That program said Windows.

I used that program to reinstall his VPN app. As I expected, during installation, the app said that it was updating. It installed and is working great. After it updated, it still said Windows.

So, to judge my friend’s PC skill level, I would point out that he calls me to help him. He knows how to make his office apps work. I ask him for help for office 365 and paperport. He is heck on wheels using his apps but has to call me for pc help.

I google the problem or failing that I come to Microsoft support.

    So, again, Thank you.

BTY. I made the mistake of clicking " Yes" to "Did this reply solve your problem" before I pasted this last THANK YOU section. As soon as the I clicked submit the page disappeared. So, I had to do it again. In my hast, I attached it to this post just before your answer. My Bad. I hope when I click "Submit" this page does not disappear again. I wish MS would provide instructions instead of hit and miss.
