Windows 11 - No Display Output from a previously functional USB-C to HDMI adapter setup

At home I use two monitors, and I have to connect one of them using a USB-C to HDMI adapter (my PC only has 1 HDMI). Previously, this adapter method has worked flawlessly since I got this laptop. But, this morning when I logged in, I had no output to my display that utilizes the adapter. My computer is recognizing the USB-C to HDMI adapter as a 'Billboard Device' instead of the monitor itself.

So far I've tried the following troubleshooting methods:

  • Swapped to a new USB-C to HDMI adapter
  • Swapped HDMI cable in use
  • Restarted/Updated all devices
  • Uninstalled/reinstalled NVIDIA Display adapter driver
  • Rolled back to a previous NVIDIA Display adapter driver (looks like a new one was installed automatically on 5/2)
  • Confirmed my USB-C port supports "Displayport Alt Mode"

Here's the specific devices being used too, in case that helps:

Dell S2721DGF Display <--> High Speed HDMI Cable <--> Anker Powerexpand+ HDMI to USB-C adapter <---> ASUS TUF Gaming A17 Laptop

Do you guys have any ideas? I'm pretty stumped. Have no idea why it seemingly quit working on me overnight.

Did this get fixed. I have this symptom now on a DELL Latitude 5320. USB-HDMI adapter has been working great for MONTHS but now nothing. The adapter works ok on another HP Laptop so the problem is with the DELL.

Btw: I don't have NVIDIA drivers on this Laptop.

    Please help?

Hi Zach, thank you for the additional info.

So it sounds like when you add the 2nd monitor, the issue happened, but it is fine as long as you only add 1 monitor regardless of connection method, right?

Can you go to your NVIDIA Control Panel, you can access it by right clicking any empty space on desktop. Then Under Display on the left pane, expand it. Do you have an option called "Set up multiple displays". Does it list all displays on the right? If so, make sure all check boxes are checked. And see if that helps.

Thank you very much. It was working for me. The only difference is, my laptop has Ryzen CPU and Radeon GPU. So it was "AMD USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller" instead of UCM-UCSI-ACPI.

Again, thank you very much, Seraph Athena.

Same issue... USBC bug with 2 montors worked for months, then... NOTHING

while the same hub connected to an M1Pro MacBook works as expected.

MS == NOTHING / hot garbage

Apple == not embrasing latest MST standards but at least works for 1 external montor duplicated on the second

WHILE Windows 11 can't do ANYTHING! Just overnight stopped working, when out of the box had the laptop and two screens, one even at 4K 60Hz

Windows, it words until it doesn't and then... GOOD LUCK as it's NEVER MS fault

    Hello Zach, this is Emily.

I've seen some typical isolation methods you've used, but looks like one scenario is not tested.

Can you disconnect the first monitor, then connect the Dell S2721DGF directly via HDMI port to the laptop, and see if it works. Make sure it is the same HDMI cable you used for the first monitor as we know that works with the first monitor.

Just want to make sure the issue is not on the computer itself.

Or, have you tried the same HDMI cable + adapter set up with the other monitor?
