The Curse of ntosrknl.exe Blue Screens: Never-Ending Headache for 3+ Years (only getting worse day by day)

I'm just putting this out here because I'm truly at a loss, I'll try to give as much context I can (minidumps at bottom). I'm well aware my chances of solving this are really low, especially with the hundreds of fruitless forum posts I see on google, never solving the issue and always completely all over the place with theories about why this happens, or people trying every thing they could possibly think of to try to fix it but it never seems to work.

I've seen people say its GPU related, windows update related, CPU overclock related, memory related (RAM speeds or damaged RAM), power supply related, corrupted driver related, etc. I am now having blue screens immediately after rebooting, and every one has a unique bucket ID. I have narrowed down the culprits to:

  • Memory address issues (corrupted ram? It passed memcheck though and I tested each stick individually)
  • CPU power issues? I have a very strong CPU which may need a lot of power to run smoothly. I haven't reapplied thermal paste for 9 months if that is something worth mentioning.
  • Power supply being too weak? I have a 750 watt running a beast of a PC + a lot of HDDs and SSDs

I've had this one piece of sh*t driver crash my PC dozens of times since 2021, but mainly in the past year after upgrading my GPU and entire PC (so I'm using a completely different PC, new board, RAM, CPU, GPU, and the same OS). I suspect there might be a power inadequacy issue causing driver conflicts with hardware.I've also tried using a new Win10 OS with this completely rebuilt PC, and still get BSODs. What sense does that make? I liken this to a curse, something I have no control over and just have to live with day by day and learn to adapt to. I'd be fine with this but the internet has been absolutely no help with narrowing this issue down, in fact it's only complicated things massively. ChatGPT4 has been 10x more useful for getting ideas on what could be, somehow.

--The Increase in Frequency--Before 2023 it was very occasional. Since mid-2023 I'd normally have about 1 BSOD every week since upgrading my PC parts, then in 2024 it increased to almost every day, sometimes 2-3 times a day. Right now its fluctuating massively from once a week to 8 times a day.

It used to be exclusively ntoskrnl.exe causing crashes (mainly ntosrknl.exe+3f5780), but after upgrading it seemed other drivers would interact, like intelppm.sys, PSHED.dll, watchdog.sys, npfs.SYS. Its worth mentioning even when it says the driver caused the crash, nto is always listed in the crash dump. More recently, its exclusively this driver at this address: ntoskrnl.exe+3fd890

After completely switching over to my 2nd OS, the BSODs seemed to go away proving my hypothesis it was that. And then it came back, with different error codes. Every single blue screen has a different FAILURE_BUCKET_ID pointing mostly to memory address issues, CPU issues, or power issues in general. As of writing I have had 8 blue screens today which is very atypical. This happening after updating my bios SEEMED to fix the issue for a whopping 7 days, and then my hope was crushed once again. I am constantly having my hope crushed after every lead I think might fix it.

Here's the most common Bug Check Strings [all related to ntosrknl.exe + other drivers]:SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (was the most common in 2021-2022, not anymore)SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTIONIRLQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (currently the most common on my new OS)DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (also common)KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLEDPAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (used to be common, then went away, now its somewhat common) UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Less Frequent: APC_INDEX_MISMATCHDRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATIONATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY (RAM related?)ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY (RAM related?)

--THINGS I'VE TRIED--****SFC /Scannow, CHKDSK, DISM: These are the obvious. None have ever changed anything for me.MemTest: Thought it was my ram causing this because I've had crashes increase after upgrading RAM and other parts, and had two memory-related BSODs recently, but it passed the test. Of course, won't be that easy. Can't really spare new 200$ ram unless I know for sure its worth it.Swapping All Components in PC: I upgraded my GPU early 2023, crashes seemed to increase in number quite a bit after this. Then upgraded everything else mid-2023, then crashes jumped in frequency even more to the point I tried jumping to a new Windows OS.New Operating System: I've installed a new OS because you'd expect something driver-related to be completely fixed after swapping. I have had some luck getting fewer bsods at first, and then as of writing 3/26/24 I am getting many many more than usual all with vastly varying error codes complicating things even further somehow. Changing BIOS Settings, updating BIOS, running with fewer external hard drives (all 3 seemed to fix it but eventually it was proven to be fake hope.

I have not figured out how to reduce overclocking on this CPU yet, its not clear in the BIOS. This might be a good idea.

I will try upgrading my PSU, then my RAM, then a warranty on my CPU, then maybe even a new motherboard. --Additional Info--Complete table of (most) of my crashes since 2021: https://ibb.co/HhzWZhxBlueScreenView of One of the BSODs: https://ibb.co/tZJtWQQThese are the FailureBucketIDs for the past 10 BSODs (found using WinDbg).AV_CODE_AV_BAD_IP_nt!KiPageFault0x7f_8_nt!KiDoubleFaultAbortAV_CODE_AV_nt!KiEndThreadAccountingPeriodAV_nt!KiSwapThread0x139_MISSING_GSFRAME_stornvme!DumpUninitializeAV_win32kbase!UserSessionSwitchLeaveCritAV_nt!KiBeginThreadAccountingPeriodAV_X_(null)_nt!MiSystemFaultAV_nt!MiGetNextPageTablePteThese are some from my old OSRAISED_IRQL_FAULT_yt-dlp.exe_nt!KiSystemServiceExitPico (related to yt-dlp? I think I solved my issue by turning off these 3 settings in my BIOS. No crashes since, its been 11 days.

    SpeedStep (TM)

    SpeedShift (TM)

    Turbo Boost Max Tech 3.0

My bets on the last one, but I wont even bother checking. If I don't update this, then my issue is completely solved.

I have an intel i9-13900k, RTX 3070, 2 sticks of 32gb DDR5 ram (2 channels on the motherboard dont work), a ROG STRIX Z790-E motherboard, and a new 1000 watt corsair RM1000e PSU. 2 Days ago I just upgraded the PSU 250 extra watts for this reason, and it immediately blue screened on boot, so its not power inadequacy. I have yet to try new RAM or get the warranty on my CPU, I will do so after re-seating the CPU and adding new thermal paste.

Prior to upgrading hardware + windows OS I would have occasional blue screens from similar causes, especially unplugging flashdrives, indicating this issue has somehow followed me across computers. It has only gradually gotten worse since mid-2023, to the point of daily BSODs and now it likes BSOD'ing right after restarting which is new.

The variety of bucket IDs is very confusing, most point to memory addresses OR the CPU, and some even point to NVMe PCI express or my GPU.

    Hello Dalauan Sparrow,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

I'm sorry to hear that your PC computer always blue screens. I have seen that you have tried a number of troubleshooting options for the error. I have also run the FailureBucketID you provided and the error reporting is as you described.

However, I would like to ask about the exact model of your CPU. In addition to that, what is the brand and model of your power supply. If the power supply is underpowered, it may lead to insufficient power supply and the error of your computer blue screen occurs. Moreover, ntoskrnl.exe is an important kernel program file of Windows operating system, which stores a lot of binary kernel code for scheduling the system.

Therefore, ntoskrnl.exe is generally not a problem. So I presume that this error is most likely due to hardware compatibility. Considering that you have tried to test the memory stick with no problem. So I will give you some more targeted options to try after you give me specific information.

    Best regards,
