I have just acquired a new laptop with Windows 10. It is pitifully slow compared with windows 7 on my old laptop which was at least 8 years old. What can I do to make it faster?

Your computer specs are exactly what I need to know.

Windows 10 does require more resources than Windows 7, so the same computer will indeed be slower on Windows 10 than Windows 7. But the difference should not be noticeable.

However, if Windows 10 is running on an HDD though, it will be very slow.

The Thinkpad T460 is a computer with a lousy disk, its a hybrid disk and I believe its performance is too low for Windows 10.

I believe replacing this disk with an SSD will improve the problem.

Thank you for your help. Over the years I have run through the various Windows iteration and even the hated Vista was better than W10. If I could get hold of Windows 7 I'd go back to it and trust to a VPN to keep me safe, as I had ever since support for W7 ended. Sadly my old HP laptop died so comprehensively that I had to get a new one, hence having to use W10 which I hate. Have unpinned all those hideous tiles from the start menu but it still pops up when all I want is the desktop - everything I use regularly is pinned to the task bar.

Soon I shall have to decide whether to upgrade to W11 but it seems to be even worse than W10, judging from the endless complaints and reports of bugs with every upgrade.

My two cents worth. I have 2 Lenovo Think Pads one about 10 years old with windows 7; the other about 3 years old with Windows 10. The hardware is virtually the same. The windows 7 consistently outperforms the W10 in every conceivable function. The W7 is easily twice as fast or greater. However, here is a twist. I installed W10 on a third air gapped computer and never bothered activating it, as it is just used for scientific software and lab interface. In the third computer W10 performs perfectly and fast. This leads me to suspect that it is the constant moronic and unnecessary updating from microsoft which is creating the sluggishness in the W10 laptop. This is very unfortunate. In my opinion XP was the best operating system microsoft created. It could actually be tweaked to the user.s needs and not dumbed down like subsequent versions.

Your questions are too technical for me to answer. I see from the internet that I am not the only one with this problem. My new laptop is Lenovo Thinkpad T460 if I remember correctly. Word documents are very slow both to open and to save by comparison with my old laptop with Windoes 7.

    Hello, I'm here to help.

Please let me confirm a couple things.

What are the specifications for this computer?

What is the slowd you are talking about? UI not smooth? Or lagging in opening software?
